Salon Pro Tutorial: Party in the back

Get creative and get inspired for your next client’s appointment! Our very own co-founder and Chief Creative Officer Brian O’Connor (@colormebrian) created this look on none other than Hayley Williams (@yelyahwilliams) for the Stella McCartney show during Paris Fashion Week. This look is all about showcasing Hayley’s glowing skin while adding a fun party vibe in back.

Step 1: Prep like a PRO

Advise your clients to come with clean hair! Having a clean canvas is key for even application, as build-up of oils or dirt can create a barrier around the hair and lead to patchy results.

Encourage your clients to stop using heat tools (blow dryer, curling iron, or flat iron) excessively for at least a week before the bleaching process. Styling with heat can strip hair of moisture and cause heat damage, which can work against the lightening process.

Step 2: Lighten like a PRO

For this look, you’ll want to lighten to a level 8 or 9. Good Dye Young’s Hair Lightening Kit comes with a pre-measured powder lightener and a 25 volume creme developer for a gentle lift, and will lift hair 4-5 levels. Moisture in the hair that is removed during the lightening process is replaced with Soy Protein and Coconut Oil to protect, condition and strengthen your client’s hair. Mix the pre-measured powder and developer until it is well-blended and clump free.

Separate hair into four quadrants. Starting in the back, fully saturate foils placed in quarter-inch sectioning. Leave the lightener around an inch off the root, until the midshaft to ends are applied and reach a level 7 or 8, then go back in and apply to the root. Heat from the scalp, and the keratin protein in newly grown hair, cause the root to lighten faster.

Check your foils every 5-10 minutes and rinse when the hair has reached your desired lightness. Never leave the lightener on for longer than 50 minutes.

Step 3: Wash like a PRO

Rinse hair thoroughly and cleanse using our Color Kind Wash Shampoo to remove all lightener and any other product build -up that your client may have. Apply our Color Kind Rinse Conditioner and let sit for 2-3 minutes, then rinse. This will even out the porosity of the hair and help you achieve a more even color. For pre-toning, DYEposit in platinum will kick remaining yellow tones in the hair, giving you a more even canvas.

Step 4: Dry like a PRO

Dry your client’s hair thoroughly. Color will absorb more evenly and come out more vivid if applied to clean, dry hair. Make sure to skip any leave-in conditioners and hair oils for this stage.

Step 5: Section like a PRO

To section for this color block, place a comb flat on the very top of your head to find where the tippy top of your head is. Take your comb and draw a line from that top to behind your ear on both sides. This will separate the front from the back equally on both sides.

Step 6: Color like a PRO

Once you perfected your section, use a generous amount of Good Dye Young’s One Night Only in Orange and apply liberally with your fingers.  One Night Only is a single-use, wash-out hair makeup that works with all hair types, textures, and lets you experiment without fear.

Step 7: Style like a PRO

For this look, Brian went with textured and wet hair to compliment Hayley’s glowing skin. Apply gel to towel dried hair and use a comb to shape the hair into the style you like. Use a diffuser attachment on a blowdryer and lock it into place!
