How to: Lightening Kit (from Copper to Purple hair)

This look was created by Bren at Fruits Hair Lab. Follow @brenfruits and @fruitshairlab for more inspo!

Step 1: Use the GDY Lightening Kit to start the bleaching process! For this look, we won’t be bleaching the roots, so take a 1/4 inch section of hair and place it in a foil.

Pro tip: The smaller the section, the faster it will process. If you have darker or thicker hair, take even thinner sections.

Step 2: Thickly layer the Lightener onto that section. For the best results, fully saturate the hair like you are icing a cake to achieve a nice, even lift.

Step 3: Add lowlights to balance warmth. Any hair that is left out of the foils will need to be color-corrected so that it does not contrast with the mauve tone too much. For example, this client is starting with copper and wants to end up with mauve. So,we added a color like Blue Ruin or Dream Big to cancel out the orange, giving her a neutral base for the mauve application.

Step 4: Process. This Lightener is premixed at 25 volume, which means that it will gently lift the hair. Check the foils every 5-10 minutes and rinse when the hair has reached your desired lightness. Never leave on for longer than 50 minutes.

Step 5: Shampoo all the color out of the hair. Wipe the lowlights off with a towel first to remove any excess color, so the blue doesn't turn the highlights green!

Shampoo twice to make sure all of the product is out of the hair, then completely dry.

Step 6: Customize your color! For this client, we used a combo of Stoned Pony, PPL Eater, and Stage Dive, adding more Stage Dive as necessary to cancel out the rest of that warmth.

Step 7: Style according to your client’s preferences! We finished this look with a beautiful new haircut and subtle waves styled with a 1.5 inch barrel curling iron.
