HOW TO: The Half Up Half Down

Our very own Brian O'Connor and the Fruits Hair Lab team styled the Susan Alexandra x Rachel Antonoff show.

One of the looks created by Brian for the models was inspired by Barbra Streisand - the Half Up Half Down. Brian shared his inspiration with us: The look was "inspired by a photo of Barbara Streisand from the 70’s. It was really all about the volume and the natural hair texture. Different from the ponytail, this look was a lot more matte, textured, and lot bigger. Susan & Rachel wanted to have at least one look that felt very big, very natural, and almost a little messy and that’s where this came into play."

Learn how to re-create this look for your clients with the steps below.

Step 1: Use two pumps of Living Proof Full Texturizing Foam and apply throughout the hair from roots to ends with hands.

Step 2: Rough dry and activate the foam to add instant volume & texture. Brian used the Olivia Garden Super HP Blow Dryer.

Step 3: Section hair into 4 parts – start at the crown of the head, sectioning the front & back. From there part both of those sections down the middle.

Step 4: One section at a time, use the Amika Undone Texture Spray from root to mid-lengths.

Step 5: Follow with the Living Proof Flex Hair Spray from root to ends.

Step 6: Using the Olivia Garden curling iron, start curling each section, alternating the direction for each curl – curling up with one and curling down with the other, so that the curls don’t sit within each other, rather sit on top of each other for a more voluminous effect.

PRO TIP:

As you finish curling each piece, do not let the curl just fall, cup it in your hand to keep the shape as the hair naturally cools from just being on the iron. This will help hold & keep the curl’s bouncy structure.

Step 7: Once you’ve curled each section, brush through the hair.

Step 8: Section the hair again from the crown of the head to just behind the ears. Part the front section down the middle, leaving 1-2 inches of hair from the hairline on each side. These pieces will eventually be pulled back for the ‘half up.’

Step 9: Start to tease the roots of the back section starting at the crown of the head & spray with Living Proof Flex Hairspray.

Step 10: Gather the front pieces and pull back as you start to create the ‘half-up.’ Use a brush to smooth out the hair as you pull it back into place.

Step 11: Once you have the hair smooth and back, tie both pieces together with a hair elastic, making sure the elastic is not tight to the head, instead a few inches back.

Step 12: Take the section of hair below the elastic, loop it through the hair, and pull tightly for a topsy tail.

Step 13: To finish the look, use Amika’s Rising Star Volumizing Spray all over to add volume & texture.
