Salon Pro Tutorial: Clementine Space Buns

Get creative and get inspired for your next client’s appointment! Our very own GDY Color Expert & Fruits Hair Lab Stylist Alexa (@alexabrookehair) just created this vibrant Clementine hair look styled in trendy space buns. Want to give this citrusy summer look a try? Follow the full tutorial below.

Step 1: Prep like a PRO

Advise your clients to come with clean hair! Having a clean canvas is key for even application, as build-up of oils or dirt can create a barrier around the hair and lead to patchy results.

Encourage your clients to stop using heat tools (blow dryer, curling iron, or flat iron) excessively for at least a week before the bleaching process. Styling with heat can strip hair of moisture and cause heat damage, which can work against the lightening process.

Step 2: Lighten like a PRO

For this look, you’ll want to lighten to a level 8 or 9. Since we’re going for orange, don’t worry about pre-toning. Good Dye Young’s Hair Lightening Kit comes with a pre-measured powder lightener and a 25 volume creme developer for a gentle lift, and will lift hair 4-5 levels. Moisture in the hair that is removed during the lightening process is replaced with Soy Protein and Coconut Oil to protect, condition and strengthen your client’s hair. Mix the pre-measured powder and developer until it is well-blended and clump free.

Separate hair into four quadrants. Starting in the back, fully saturate foils placed in quarter-inch sectioning. Leave the lightener off the root, until the midshaft to ends are applied, then go back in and apply to the root. Heat from the scalp, and the keratin protein in newly grown hair, cause the root to lighten faster.

Check your foils every 5-10 minutes and rinse when the hair has reached your desired lightness. Never leave the lightener on for longer than 50 minutes.

Step 3: Wash like a PRO

Rinse hair thoroughly and cleanse using our Color Kind Wash Shampoo to remove all lightener and any other product build -up that your client may have. Apply our Color Kind Rinse Conditioner and let sit for 2-3 minutes, then rinse. This will even out the porosity of the hair and help you achieve a more even color.

Step 4: Dry like a PRO

Dry your client’s hair thoroughly. Color will absorb more evenly and come out more vivid if applied to clean, dry hair. Make sure to skip any leave-in conditioners and hair oils for this stage. It is important to have dry hair to ensure the pigment in the dye is not diluted with any water or product left in the hair.

Step 5: Saturate like a PRO

To keep your application even and consistent, section into four quadrants. Apply Biz on the roots first, making sure to saturate fully. After, apply to the rest of the hair starting from the nape and working up.

Saturation is key! To ensure proper saturation, continue working in quarter-inch sections, and for every 2-4 inches of hair, apply a new dollop of color. Since semi-permanents are direct dyes, meaning they are not oxidative, where you place the color, will be where the pigment lives. You don’t want to overwork the color into the hair, as this will cause patchy results. Let the color process for 30 minutes at room temperature.

This look uses semi-perm BIZ all over - Hayley’s signature bold orange shade.
GDY’s colors are beautiful straight out of the tube and can also be mixed together to create your own custom shades. BIZ is a neon, yellow-based orange. GDY’s semi-permanent hair dye combines salon-grade pigments with a nontoxic formula that deposits ultra vibrant color. Our semi-permanent hair dyes do not damage the hair. In fact, they’re super conditioning with a high-quality cream base that acts like a hydrating hair mask with essential oil benefits.

Step 6

Use cold water to rinse the color out. GDY’s semi-permanent formula has a conditioning base as well as essential oils, so you do not need to apply conditioner either. Rinse with cold water until the water runs clear.

Step 7

Towel dry the hair and apply GDY’s Color Kind Prime (Hair Primer) before blow drying. Prime will coat the hair cuticle to keep color from fading prematurely due to heat sources and UV rays while promoting hair health. Blow dry hair completely! If using styling tools, apply heat protectant prior and use a low heat setting.

Step 8: Style like a PRO

For this look, we wanted to do a fun twist on space buns. Starting with a zig zag part, use the end of a tail comb to zig zag and separate the left and right of your hair down the middle. Create 2 ponytails on the top of the head, twist them into buns and fluff them out. Feel free to use a few bobby pins along the way to get them just right!

Step 9

After the appointment is concluded, advise clients to wait 2-3 days before washing their hair. Always use cold water, professional-grade sulfate free shampoo (GDY’s Color Kind Wash), conditioner (GDY’s Color Kind Rinse), and heat protectant (GDY’s Color Kind Prime).
