Vivid hair and extensions? What a power couple! Volume, length, and color that screams you’re a baddie. It’s the ultimate combo for anyone who believes hair should be as bold as their personality.
But vivid color and extensions both need a little extra love to stay looking their best. The good news? Keeping them healthy and vibrant for you or your client doesn’t have to be complicated! It just takes the right products, smart habits, and a few pro-approved tricks that our Education Director implemented while on set styling your TikTok bestie, Miranda Rae.
How to Color Vivid Extensions
Working with vivid color on extensions requires a slightly different approach than natural hair to ensure even saturation and long-lasting results.
Before applying color, wash the extensions and allow them to fully dry. This step removes any manufacturer coating that can prevent proper color absorption. Always apply vivid color to clean, dry extensions for the most consistent payoff. Also, ensure the extensions are completely detangled. Extensions require a gentle hand so avoid excessive tension or rough handling, as this can compromise the integrity of the hair.
When you’re ready to color, lay the extensions flat on a clean surface. This allows for control and even distribution. Be sure to fully saturate the hair, working the color through carefully and checking both sides to avoid patchiness.
After processing, gently wash and condition the hair. Finally, let extensions hang to dry on a rack. This helps maintain their natural fall and prevents creasing or uneven drying. If you need to dry them quickly, a low to medium heat setting is recommended.
Once fully dry, take a moment to smooth and refine the extensions before installing. Clean, detangled, and properly finished extensions will blend seamlessly and elevate the final result and make installation easier.
Wash Smart, Wash Less, Stay Vibrant
Using a color-safe shampoo and conditioner keeps the shade bright and the extensions soft. Harsh cleansers can strip pigment and dry out extension hair, which already doesn’t receive natural oils from the scalp the way natural hair does.
That’s why we love Good Dye Young’s Wash and Rinse. They’re free of parabens and sulfates, meaning they cleanse without compromising the color or the integrity of extensions.
When washing, focus on the scalp and gently work the product through the hair. nVivid extensions deserve the VIP treatment, so no aggressive scrubbing is needed.
Keep the conditioner application on the ends of the hair, so as to not loosen any of the extensions.
Healthy Extensions = Happy Hair
After washing, swap a regular towel for a microfiber towel. Microfiber helps absorb excess water without roughing up the hair cuticle, which means less frizz, less tangling, and happier extensions overall.
Between wash days, instruct your clients to protect their color and extension attachments by wearing a shower cap in the shower. Steam and water exposure can slowly fade vivid shades and create unnecessary moisture around extension bonds or wefts.
And when it is time to wash, please bestie, dry them thoroughly.
Leaving moisture trapped near the scalp, especially around extension attachments, can lead to irritation and scalp issues. After washing, take the time to make sure everything is fully dry at the base. A blow dryer on a medium setting works great for this and helps keep the scalp environment healthy.
Always Use Heat Protection
If you’re styling with hot tools heat protection is non-negotiable.
Before curling, straightening, or blow-drying, apply Good Dye Young’s Prime or your favorite heat protectant. It acts like a protective shield against heat damage while keeping extensions silky and smooth.
And when it’s time to style, keep your heat tools on the lower side. Extensions can’t repair themselves the way natural hair can, so using lower heat settings helps preserve both the hair quality and your vivid color.
The On-Set Trick for Busy Days
Sometimes you don’t have time for a full wash but you still need your client or model's hair looking camera-ready.
While working on set with Miranda Rae, we ran into exactly that situation. Her vivid color had been done a week earlier using her custom shade, Baddie, and we wanted to refresh her hair quickly without disturbing the extensions.
The solution? A quick top wash.
Instead of shampooing everything, we washed just the top section of her hair, focusing on the scalp where oil tends to build up first. It instantly revived her hair while leaving the extensions untouched.
It’s a great trick for photoshoots, events, or anytime you need a fast refresh without a full reset.
Vivid extensions are meant to be fun, fearless, and expressive. With fool-proof dying methods, color-safe washing, gentle drying, heat protection, you’ll be sure to have your clients returning for vivid extensions time and time again.
