Decade of Dye Community Spotlight: Curstin + Rock Lobster

Meet the community behind the color. To celebrate 10 years of Good Dye Young, we put out a casting call on social media and invited our community to help us tell our story.  In less than 24 hours, more than 500 people applied to be part of our Decade of Dye campaign. From those submissions, we selected 8 community members to represent the 8 original shades that launched GDY back in 2016.

Meet Curstin, wearing Rock Lobster.

Name: Curstin
Pronouns: she/her
Location: Brooklyn, NY
Occupation: Creative Marketing
OG GDY Shade: Rock Lobster

How long have you been using color?

“For YEARS! (Sorry, I can’t remember the exact number LOL)”

Once you’ve lost count, that’s how you know your vibrant hair journey has officially become a lifestyle.

What is your favorite thing about Good Dye Young?

“Too many things to list! My hair truly loves GDY =)”

GDY loves your hair right back! Hayley was rocking bold hair colors for over ten years before she realized that she didn’t have to settle for semi-permanent hair color formulas that sacrificed her overall hair health to achieve vibrant results. In collaboration with Brian O’Connor, she developed a line of colors that really do love your hair back.

What does community mean to you?

“Community means everything to me! I wouldn’t be who I am without my communities”

We feel the same way! Good Dye Young is where it is today — celebrating ten years of creativity, color, and community — because of all the people who helped make it happen: our loyal customers, our talented salon professionals and creative artists, and of course, our Team GDY who works hard behind the scenes to bring all of Hayley and Brian’s beautiful ideas to life.

Why Rock Lobster?

Curstin is wearing Rock Lobster, one of the eight OG shades that launched Good Dye Young in 2016.

Curstin has been dyeing her hair so long that she’s lost count, and she loves so many different tones — from pinks and cool tones to greens and pastels. Right now, she is rocking the classic Rock Lobster because she does just love a savory red. What color will she try next?

The Story Behind the Shade: Rock Lobster

Like every original GDY shade name, Rock Lobster came from the creative world Hayley and Brian were building when they launched the brand, drawing inspiration from the films, music, pop culture references, and the stories they loved.

This classic warm-based electric red is a quirky nod to the iconic 1978 song by The B-52's.
