Love the idea of a fun hair makeover without the commitment of permanent color? If that’s you, then semi-permanent hair dye is a dream come true; you get the chance to play with an exciting new look, but without long-term obligation to a new color.
Semi-permanent color lasts approximately 4-6 weeks. If you fall in love with a color during that time, you can continue to add the same shade in your hair for touch-ups. However, you also have the freedom to try something new, too.
Whether you’ve just always wondered how you would look as a bold, red-head or love keeping up with current color trends, semi-permanent hair dye is the revolutionary hair color movement perfect for your self-expression.
Here are some of the main facts you need to know about our semi-perm dyes:
What is semi-permanent hair color?
Semi-permanent hair dye is meant for short-term hair color changes. The dye coats the surface of the hair shaft, rather than fundamentally changing the color of the hair. This creates an easy-on, easy-off solution that can be mixed to create various colors and shades.
Benefits of GDY Semi-Perm Dyes:
- High quality cream base, like a hair mask
- Color lasts 4-6 weeks
- Vibrant color, mixable to create your own custom shade
- Peroxide and Ammonia free so it won’t damage your hair
- Includes Sunflower Extract, rich in Vitamins A, C, and E to condition
- Scented with Bergamot Essential Oil, for a subtle citrus scent that promotes feelings of happiness and warmth
- Vegan and Cruelty-Free
- Free List: Ammonia-Free, Peroxide-Free, Formaldehyde-Free, 4-APB Free, PPD-Free, Persulfates-Free, Paraben-Free, Resorcinol-Free, MEA-Free, Nickel-Free
Short on time? Semi-permanent hair needs to sit on the hair for only 30 minutes after application.
How long does it last?
Most semi-permanent dyes will last between 4-6 weeks, while certain tones like blues and greens may last even longer. The color will start to fade little by little with each wash, but the beautiful fade out process is all part of the fun!
If you want to retain the longevity of you color, there are several key tips to keep in mind for success. For starters, be sure to use a color protecting shampoo and conditioner if you don’t already. Finally, using a color protecting primer after washing will help protect your hair against heat styling and UV rays that can also fade your color.
What is the difference between permanent and semi-permanent hair color?
Permanent and semi-permanent hair color vary in several respects. One difference is chemical composition. In addition to being vegan and cruelty-free, our semi-permanent dyes are peroxide and ammonia free so they won’t damage your hair. As previously mentioned, semi-permanent hair dye, unlike other dyes, does not fundamentally change the color of your hair. Instead, it simply coats the surface of the hair shaft. This creates an easy-on, easy-off solution that produces only short-term and reversible effects.

Is it color damaging to hair?
Because it does not contain harsh or permanent chemicals, our semi-permanent color is not damaging to your hair. In fact, our semi-perm colors include Sunflower Extract and other essential oils, rich in Vitamins A, C, and E to condition hair while coloring. This also makes it safe to use on hair that has been professionally relaxed or permed.
Will my hair go back to normal?
Because semi-permanent dye does not fundamentally change the color or texture of your hair, you can certainly expect your hair color to revert back to its original state after using semi-permanent dye. As with any kind of hair dye, you’ll notice that the color fades gradually before vanishing completely.
Will the color wash out completely?
Yes! semi-permanent dye does eventually wash out completely. That’s because it does not bind permanently to the hair strands. If you like the new hair color and want to prevent it from fading, it’s a good idea to apply a touch-up color every few weeks. If you want a new color or want to restore your original hair color, expect to see a complete color reversal within about two months or less for most colors.
Is all semi-permanent hair dye bright?
One of the best parts of semi-permanent hair color is the creative freedom you have to play with it. Our colors are vibrant, but you can determine just how bright you want to be. You can go big and bold, mixing colors for more dramatic looks or simply add Fader to create more pastel shades. You can also mix a few drops of GDY color with RINSE, color kind conditioner as a mask for a temporary color that will last a few washes. The possibilities are endless and you can customize for a truly unique look as individual as you are.
Is temporary dye bad for hair?
Temporary dye is not bad for hair. In contrast, it can add shine and vivacity to otherwise dull, listless, and over-styled hair. Temporary dye washes out quickly and easily due to the fact that it is free of harsh chemicals. Peroxide and ammonia are the most common chemicals in hair dye that cause the most damage in hair. Since our products don’t use these, your hair stays healthy!
