What does it do?

Our semi-permanent hair dye line combines salon-grade pigments with a nontoxic, conditioning formula that deposits ultra vibrant color. Semi-permanent hair dyes do not damage the hair, in fact they’re super conditioning! GDY’s formula combines a high-quality cream base, like a hair mask with essential oil benefits. The color is deposited on top of the hair shaft and acts like a stain that will fade out over time each time you wash your hair. Color can last anywhere from 4-6 weeks. We recommend using color protecting hair care like our GDY Color Kind Line to keep color vibrant longer.

What does it smell like?
Fragranced with Bergamot essential oil, our semi-permanent dye has a light citrus scent that is mood lifting.

Is this for my hair?

Our semi-permanent dyes will show the truest color on pre-lightened hair, levels 8-10. We recommend using our Lightening Kit to get the perfect base shade for your color.

What to know?
Semi-perm is a thick, conditioning formula, no need to mix with a conditioner.
Color payoff will vary based how much hair is lightened as well as on the porosity of the hair and underlying hair chemistry. We recommend a hair strand test to determine color payoff.

Safe on:
All hair textures, pre lightened, chemically treated, keratin treated, and color treated hair.

  • Healthy hair focused, no PPDs, Ammonia, Sulfates, Parabens or other harsh for hair chemicals or additives.
  • Sunflower Extract adds extra UV protection from the sun and hot tools that fade hair.
  • Fragranced with essential oil Bergamot, known for its mood-lifting properties.
  • Ultra creamy formula that deeply conditions while depositing color.

Our Semi-permanent dyes are free from:

  • 4-ABP
  • Ammonia
  • Peroxide
  • Formaldehyde
  • PPD’s
  • Persulfates
  • Paraben
  • Resorcinol
  • MEA
  • Nickel
  • Bleach
  • Phthalates
  • All of our products are vegan and cruelty free
  • Step 1: To create the best canvas for your color, we recommend lightening your hair using our GDY Lightening Kit.
  • Step 2: Mix color in the GDY Color Mixing Bowl and use gloves to prevent staining hands.
  • Step 3: Ensure you strand test first before applying color all over your head.
  • Step 4: Section and apply directly onto dry hair. Make sure color is fully saturated at every step by combining product through each section.
  • Step 5: Let the color sit for at least 30 minutes.
  • Step 6: Rinse with cold water and style as desired with GDY Prime.
Care:

  • Allow at least 24 hours before your first shampoo.
  • Rinse hair with cool water each time you wash to minimize fading process.
  • Reduce hair washing days to extend color.

Tips:

  • While color is processing, use a cap to keep the color damp.
  • Coloring your hair is an investment. Make sure to use color protecting hair care like GDY’s Color Kind Line to keep color vibrant longer.
  • Product will stain, so protect hands, all surfaces and clothing.
  • Apply shea butter, coconut oil or thick conditioner to the hairline to prevent staining.
  • Check out our FAQ’s for more information
  • Our improved formula has a warmer base that fades to a true purple.
  • PPL Eater will add a tint to darker hair and show up vividly on level 7+ hair

This dye would be useful to put over red if the dye you’re using is heavily red based as this dye is heavily blue based. I used a different purple dye from a different brand but it somehow turned my hair red and remembered I had this dye and didn’t use it since it turned ny hair blue but honestly this dye does work if you’re looking to go from red to purple if you put it over red or the dye you’re using is too heavily red based. I highly suggest making changes to the formula so it’s actually purple similar to manic panic’s purple haze or arctic fox’s purple rain. Because this dye is turning people’s hair blue and not purple and not everyone can or wants to spend the money to get another dye just to get the purple that is advertised to them because it’s wrong and messed up.

    • Jackie from GDY

      Hi there,

Thanks for your review. Our purple is a blue based purple which means you may see a more violet hue. For a warmer purple I would suggest adding some red or pink if you are able to.

First let me say if I could give this a zero I would. As you can probably see from every other review it was blue and the solution is to spend more money and buy another colour to go with it! No only was my hair blue, but I applied it two weeks ago and now my hair is a disgusting green colour!!! No matter how many washes I do this is not coming out!! I had such high hopes and I am beyond disappointed. You say you’ve listened to customers and made changes to the formula to make it more purple but you haven’t. Luckily I’ve contacted Lime Crime and they’re going to help me out with a true purple to rectify this disaster I’ve got on my head. I’m not normally one to complain but I’m so angry and disappointed

    • Jackie from GDY

      Hi Lexie,

Thanks for reaching out. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy your PPL eater experince. Our purple is a blue based purple so it can pull more violet. As purple fades due to the color make up it will fade blue and then green. Please feel free to reach out to [email protected] to pass on any further information.

I was super excited to have this amazing purple hair colour… My sister dyed her hair with this a while back and I loved it! So I bought it 2 months ago, I dyed my hair a couple of days ago and it’s BLUE!! I know how hard it is to get out of hair so I’m pretty upset. Hope you have better luck!

    • Jackie from GDY

      Hi there,

Our purple is a blue based purple so sometimes hair holds on to the blue hues more than the reds/pinks in the dye and you can end up with a more violet purple. We suggest adding Ex-Girl to your dye before applying if you are looking for a more warm toned purple.

I so badly wanted to love this dye because my friend had great experiences with the Steal My Sunshine colour, but this was so disappointing. I bought this dye when I was in the USA at the start of the year and I was really excited to try it when I got home, but when my hairdresser first put the dye in the bowl she couldn’t believe I hadn’t been given blue dye by mistake, and she was horrified when the end result came out completely blue as well. Luckily it was a lovely shade of blue and I liked it, but its not what I paid for. The first time I used it we left the dye on for 30 minutes as per the instructions, but it came out really patchy with some parts looking very pale and washing out to a blue-y/green colour within a couple of weeks. The only time I saw any purple in my hair was during sunset with direct warm sunlight on my hair. I still had half a tube left so we tried again a few months later and left the dye on a bit longer than the box instructs, but it still came out blue and patchy, with areas that had been saturated with dye barely holding it at all. I’ve seen other reviews (as recent as last week) where someone from GDY suggests mixing this colour with another shade, but surely if the the colour on the box is clearly purple then you shouldn’t have to buy another dye to get anywhere close to that colour? Before this I always used a blue-based Directions purple dye which is a fraction of the price and the colour is much more accurate (and has never been so patchy), so I don’t really understand what excuse GDY can use when they charge nearly 4x more and then suggest buying more dye to fix the problem with this one. I know from friends’ experiences that most of the other shades are great, so I’m really disappointed with this one because I wanted to like it.
The one positive to this dye is that it fades from a dark electric blue to a nice, brighter blue which lasts really well, though that might not be a positive if you don’t like blue.

Sadly, I wouldn’t rush to use this brand again after this experience, even if they did start selling it in the UK.

I put this dye on my white hair. * The color on this box is very misleading. I assumed that this dye was a purple based purple when that is just simply not the case. I have had blue hair 2 times before and genuinely hated it each time. Blue is the WORST to get out. I wanted to dye it purple because it always fades so lovely. Do not buy this color if you do not want your hair to be blue. It is not an ugly color or anything but it is far from what I wanted. I’ve been trying to fade it out for weeks and it is so, so stubborn. It’s had me in tears multiple times. And I decided to do this right before Halloween so I get to have this miserable mess throughout the holidays and listen to family members make comments about how they thought I hated blue hair on me and why I would dye it back to such a color, blah, blah, blah. Will definitely nooooot be purchasing again.

      Hi There,

I’m so sorry for your disappointing experince. Our PPL Eater is a blue based purple so depending on how porous your hair is it may hold on to the blue pigments more. If you want a warmer purple we suggest adding Ex-Girl to your color. If you need further help removing the color, feel free to reach out to our expert at [email protected].

It was a stunning color that went over both my orangey blonde recently dyed roots and my faded blue washed out dyed hair. It’s really vibrant and I feel like it has hints of both blues and warmer tones as well. Love it

I used this last night and my hair is a very dark vibrant blue. Kind of what I’ve seen with people who use blue ruin. I’m wondering if the bottles got switched by some turd in the store or mixed up in packaging by GDY. Either way it’s horrible and not what I wanted AT. ALL. In tears reading people say it lasts a long time because I want this out of my hair ASAP. I’m begging y’all to label the bottles with the color name as well.

    • Jackie from GDY

      Hi there,

I’m sorry you didn’t love your PPL Eater experince. Our purple is a blue based purple which is why it may seem a bit more violet. Also for our colors to show truest they should be applied to pre lightened hair. If you have any questions or further feedback, please feel free to reach out to our expert at [email protected]

I recently ordered PPL EATER in the new formula (warmer base) and it’s exactly what I was looking for. I used the old formula PPL EATER several months ago and it was definitely not what I was going for. It was much more blue and faded into a teal color. Overall, the color wasn’t BAD, it just wasn’t what I was trying to do and not what I expected. Blue/teal stays in my hair basically permanently, so I was a little disappointed that I was “stuck” with it for the time being. I let my roots grow out long enough so I could bleach them and try the new PPL EATER formula. I LOVE IT. Like I said, it’s exactly the color I was going for in the first place. So now I’m rocking a purple/teal look, and I’m loving it.

Started using this dye a few months ago and honestly really loved it. I wanted a blue and a purple so I used this one with blue ruin and it was really pretty. it was definitely blue leaning but I really didn’t care because it was a nice blue and faded into a really nice bluey teal color. Now I am trying to go for a more purple look so I’m combining sky high with ex girl. Hopefully that will turn out well but, it’s been a long process to try to get to that because I’ve been trying to get this color out of my hair for the last 12 hours. I started with the color oops hair color remover which I used previously and it worked great on other brands. But with this one it made absolutely no dent in it. So then I I decided to just go ahead and bleach, since I needed to update my roots anyway. I did that and my very dark brown roots turned to a much lighter yellow color but the blue was still there. I was freaking out because I was very confused, so I went through and washed my hair twice with Dawn dish soap and then did a bleach wash. The color is still there. I am currently bleaching again hoping my hair will not fall out. I do have to get this color started otherwise I’m going to have yellow roots and blue ends and that is not a look for me. Other than the long-lasting color it’s great though! And honestly if you’re looking to stay blue for a while 10 out of 10 would recommend. Just be prepared to shave your head as soon as you want change- I might.

I had waited a very long time to get back into the colored hair world, and decided to give this color a try because it was recommended to me and the purple on the box is STUNNING. HOWEVER, I dyed it with this 4 months ago and have done many vitamin C treatments and even went through a full on bleaching a bleach wash to get it out. The bleach did not get it out AT ALL and within my 8 years of dying my hair this has never happened to me. It was still BRIGHT. I’ve resorted to dying it over an ACTUAL purple because this purple isn’t even purple, but BLUE! Absolutely horrible and staining color, and has made me too scared to try any of the others.

    • Jackie from GDY

      Hi There,

Sorry you didn’t love your experience with PPL Eater. Our dyes are packed with pigment to give you that long lasting color, which is why it sometimes sticks around longer than anticipated. Thanks for your review.

I had loved how this looked over natural brown hair….making it darker with that hint of purple. I wasn’t looking for this to be how it is on bleached hair. Just looking for that little something. I was really hoping this would be a bit bolder. I left it on for an hour at least. My hair looks a little darker, but not much purple. My ivory bathtub on the other hand….that thing is PURPLE! I don’t recommend this if you have a non smooth surfaced tub or washing area. If it is textured or porous you may have issues with staining when you wash. It comes off of the skin pretty well though which is nice. If I try it again, I will have to get the lightener I guess.

    • Jackie from GDY

      Hi There!

Thanks for your review! Our dyes are packed with pigment to give you a vibrant color on lightened hair. However, that also lends to some bleeding and staining, but that should be able to be washed a way safely with bleach. I’m glad you were able to get a slight tint. We do recommend that for a more vibrant color you lightening you hair before dying.

This is more of an ultra violet than a purple as it’s heavily blue toned. only in direct sunlight does it look purple. I used the GDY bleach kit and colored over a bleached pink and very white blonde. This is a purple toned blue hair dye that’s very dark and saturated. I don’t hate it but I won’t buy this again unless I want blue hair

    • Jackie from GDY

      Hi Grace,

Thanks for your review. Our previous formula was a blue based purple so it could appear more violet than a true purple. We listened to your feedback and others and improved the formula to be a more true purple. This improved formula is exclusively on our site right now.

I really like the parts that are purple, but even after I used their bleach kit (which worked amazing) some spots didn’t turn purple but just really dark almost black. For the price I think it should have more product, I had to get 2 bottles because I wasn’t able to get all my hair with just one. I do like the parts that actually turned purple, but dont think I’ll be buying this one again

      Hi There!

Thanks for reaching out. Im sorry you didn’t absolutely love your PPL Eater experience. Depending on the length and thickness of your hair it determines how many bottles you will need. If the hair wasn’t lifted evenly that could lead to different spots being different hues. Our hair expert would be happy to help with any other questions you may have, email her [email protected]

I ordered after the restock, and after they had announced the new formula. I had not ordered from them before, but wanted to try the new formula since I saw the reviews. The new formula turned my mom’s hair, lifted to a level 9, bright blue. Not even a hint of purple really, just straight blue. Very disappointed.

I bought this and now have blue hair. It even went greenish as well and I had to go buy a separate companies’ hair color to correct the green. I even asked for help and the best advice was to buy more product to fix the blue that came from the purple. I just don’t think that is fair or right

    • Jackie from GDY

      Hi there,

I bought this thinking that it was going to be a beautiful deep purple on my blonde highlights. I have BRIGHT blue hair now. It has been 4 months and it is still blue. I have tried every way in the world it remove it without bleach with no results. It was a pretty blue tbh. It does deserve the star for how long it stays in, and how vivid it was. But, geez. I need some feedback on how to get it out of my hair. I made an account just to leave this review.

I really wish I would have read the reviews before I bought this. I bought it at Sally’s on a whim. I knew that this brand was really good. I guess I just picked a dud color. Lol

    • Jackie from GDY

      Hi There!

Our previous formula is a blue based purple which is why as it fades you will see that blue color. We have improved the formula and are currently selling it on our site. As for getting it our our experts always suggest using a sulfate shampoo and warm water to pull the pigment of your hair. Our darker colors like purple, blue, green will last longer than any of our lighter colors due to the pigment molecules. If you have any other questions and would like to speak with our hair expert, reach out to Becca at [email protected]

Please don’t use this dye, I wish I never had. This “purple” dye seems ok before you wash your hair, and then it changes color and fades into an awful blueish-green nightmare with the first wash. I wish I had just read the other reviews before using it. It is not as advertised.

Made an account just to make a review bc I’m THAT mad! I was recommended this dye because it was supposedly a gorgeous purple color. So I bought 2 tubes because of my thick curly hair and I am so disappointed. My hair is literally sonic blue and green even though my hair was very light and even before dying it. I hate my hair and now I’m stuck with 2 tubes of expensive dye!!!

Holy lies. Ok, so I have had purple hair for years. I always have had to mix my own dye to get the right blue based purple.after being in a wedding and going brown for a few months for that I did some research and found this color. All the pictures seemed to be my perfect blue based purple!! So I lightened my hair and ended up with easily a level 9 bottom and up to some hot roots that were maybe a coppery 7. Used the dye per instructions.. was little worried that it looked pure blue but y’know it always looks different wet…. well it looked. Blue cause it was blue.the ONLY part of mohair that was any tinted of purple were my hot copy roots. Gorgeous warm purple. The rest was straight up blue. Like blue blue. Not blue based purple. Not purpley blue. Just blue. It faded to a dang teal. Looked just like atomic turquoise. I have no clue how this is marketed as a purple dye. My length was a clean lift, with my natural roots going hot so idk how ANYONE would get purple unless they started with a red color to begin. I’m not sure how to negate the blue cause l know blue never leaves your hair. If you want purple hair but blue is fine toon buy this. If purple.is what you’re after and not straight up blue…I’d definitely test an inconspicuous patch first.

So disappointed in this color. I’ve used two other GDY colors, and they were great. This is just a huge miss. I pre-lightened my hair, and when I rinsed it, the color was straight up denim blue. I don’t wash my hair very often, maybe twice a week, and everyday the color was fading more and more. Don’t even know how that could happen. I’ve cried a lot since this color is has been in my hair because it seems as though it’s stained my hair. I’ve been using a clarifying conditioner to attempt to lighten the color, and even the pre-lightened parts that were near platinum blonde are now a light brown. Very, very disappointed in this color.
