What does it do?

Our semi-permanent hair dye line combines salon-grade pigments with a nontoxic, conditioning formula that deposits ultra vibrant color. Semi-permanent hair dyes do not damage the hair, in fact they’re super conditioning! GDY’s formula combines a high-quality cream base, like a hair mask with essential oil benefits. The color is deposited on top of the hair shaft and acts like a stain that will fade out over time each time you wash your hair. Color can last anywhere from 4-6 weeks. We recommend using color protecting hair care like our GDY Color Kind Line to keep color vibrant longer.

What does it smell like?
Fragranced with Bergamot essential oil, our semi-permanent dye has a light citrus scent that is mood lifting.

Is this for my hair?

Our semi-permanent dyes will show the truest color on pre-lightened hair, levels 8-10. We recommend using our Lightening Kit to get the perfect base shade for your color.

What to know?
Semi-perm is a thick, conditioning formula, no need to mix with a conditioner.
Color payoff will vary based how much hair is lightened as well as on the porosity of the hair and underlying hair chemistry. We recommend a hair strand test to determine color payoff.

Safe on:
All hair textures, pre lightened, chemically treated, keratin treated, and color treated hair.

  • Healthy hair focused, no PPDs, Ammonia, Sulfates, Parabens or other harsh for hair chemicals or additives.
  • Sunflower Extract adds extra UV protection from the sun and hot tools that fade hair.
  • Fragranced with essential oil Bergamot, known for its mood-lifting properties.
  • Ultra creamy formula that deeply conditions while depositing color.

Our Semi-permanent dyes are free from:

  • 4-ABP
  • Ammonia
  • Peroxide
  • Formaldehyde
  • PPD’s
  • Persulfates
  • Paraben
  • Resorcinol
  • MEA

  • All of our products are vegan and cruelty free
  • Step 1: To create the best canvas for your color, we recommend lightening your hair using our GDY Lightening Kit.
  • Step 2: Mix color in the GDY Color Mixing Bowl and use gloves to prevent staining hands.
  • Step 3: Ensure you strand test first before applying color all over your head.
  • Step 4: Section and apply directly onto dry hair. Make sure color is fully saturated at every step by combining product through each section.
  • Step 5: Let the color sit for at least 30 minutes.
  • Step 6: Rinse with cold water and style as desired with GDY Prime.
Care:

  • Allow at least 24 hours before your first shampoo.
  • Rinse hair with cool water each time you wash to minimize fading process.
  • Reduce hair washing days to extend color.

Tips:

  • While color is processing, use a cap to keep the color damp.
  • Coloring your hair is an investment. Make sure to use color protecting hair care like GDY’s Color Kind Line to keep color vibrant longer.
  • Product will stain, so protect hands, all surfaces and clothing.
  • Apply shea butter, coconut oil or thick conditioner to the hairline to prevent staining.

I love this dye so much. If you’re looking for a permanent, lasting purple, you might not like PPL eater, but it worked out perfectly for me. The color right after you dye is a stunning purple, and it fades into a beautiful cyan blue. Purple and blue were my top two choices in color, and I’m so glad I can switch between both colors with PPL eater. The formula in general is also awesome – smells great and made my hair super soft after bleaching. It’s an awesome first hair color!

      Hi there!

Thank you so much for reviewing our PPL Eater! Our PPL Eater is a blue-based purple so it’s great for those deciding between purple and blue!

Not sure why the PPL eater has some low stars. It bums me out that some had a bad experience with this color because I absolutely LOVE the deep royal purple shade it gave my hair! Plus it smells amazing and deeply conditioned my hair. Highly recommend 🙂

I have mixed feelings about this dye. My first time using it I mixed it with another brand and I loved the way it turned out. It faded to blue which I didn’t mind. When I rebleached my roots and went over it again with only GDY it was pure blue. I’m fine with blue but if you’re expecting a purple like on the box I recommend mixing it with something.

      Hi!

Thanks so much for reviewing PPL Eater! We’re so sorry your results ended up being more blue than purple! We are aware of an issue with our PPL Eater in which the small amount of warm pigments in PPL Eater were also wearing off at an accelerated rate. This issue has now been fixed and these new PPL Eater tubes are available on our website. Our PPL Eater is still a blue-based purple though so depending on the texture, porosity, and underlying hues of your hair, results may vary and could still look a bit more blue depending on these factors! If you’re looking to get a warmer purple, we suggest mixing our PPL Eater with our Ex-Girl!I would love to offer you a refund for your troubles. Please email us at [email protected] so we can figure this out!

I was so excited to dye my hair with this color because purple’s my favorite! Imagine my surprise (and disappointment) while I was washing my hair, seeing it blue and not purple 🙁 Lesson learned, read the reviews before adding to cart.

For what it’s worth, it’s really vibrant and strong (and I feel it would last long after many washes). However, I was misled, thinking the color would be close to the color on the box. Now I feel like someone dumped buckets of blue pen ink on my head.

If I’m after a purple color, I don’t think I’d buy this. I’d buy Stoned Pony, or mix this with a reddish color (as you guys suggest on other reviews here). But I think it would be best if the dye is true to its intended color, as not many are keen on mixing. Some suggestions: either the color of the dye were changed to a truer purple OR at least the color on the box matches the results, to avoid confusion. TBH, PPL Eater looks more like INDIE GOGO (haha, thought of a name for you guys).

GDY failed me on this one, but that doesn’t mean I’ll continue trying your other colors and supporting the brand! <3 Hope this review helps in improving the product eventually!

I dyed my hair with this in Feb and honestly at first I was a little upset because it was very blue purple rather then the deep royal/red purple I wanted… But I honestly love it. My hair months after is fading to an amazing sapphire blue shade! I honestly love it. I bought narwhal (the turquoise colour) to go into my hair once it faded but some parts (because of my bad bleaching job) are starting to fade to a nice turquoise. Honestly impressed that I dyed my hair at the start of feb and in the middle of June I still have a great blue sapphire going on. I will note I only dyed about half my just below shoulder length hair. So maybe a few inches not my roots. But it’s great definitely gonna go for this colour again. Seriously need to try it. It shouldn’t get the bad reviews that it has.

I really wish I’d read more reviews before I’d bought it, my (bleached to a very light blonde) hair turned blue through the length and grey at my roots. Not what I wanted at all, super disappointed.

smells nice and hair feels soft but my white hair is now bright blue. Exactly same color as my Budgie bird. My darker hair is blue green. I thought maybe the tubes had been put in wrong box? Is there any color name on the tube? Should I put rock lobster over top to change it to purple?

this is definitely a very blue toned purple. I bought it at Sally beauty and I thought it would be a good color. not a fan. My hair looks more blue than purple. I’ve used Arctic Fox purple rain before and that really gives a true purple look on my hair so I expected similar results here

Honestly… wasn’t great. Maybe we made a mistake but the purple only seemed to stay in the front; the rest of the hair came out a cool witch-like gray. After the next shower the little bit of purple had turned to blue. Guess I should have read the reviews here first but feel pretty ripped off. I think this color needs to go back to the drawing board. Sorry guys. 🙁

I’ve been using Riot for a while now and absolutely love it. My hair looks amazing. My husband decided he wanted to get in on the fun and add some purple to his hair. This dye is not purple. We bleached his hair before putting it in and yet his hair still came out the bluest blue I’ve ever seen. Not only that it destroyed our bathroom. When I rinse my hair with Riot I splash water where orange lands and it all washes away nicely. Not with this dye. Everywhere a single droplet of water touched that contained “purple” dye instantly stained blue. Our sink is now blue, our counter is now blue, our shower is now blue, my husband is now blue. His skin turned a bluish color when he took a shower. I’m now married to a smurf. We tried cleaning the shower immediately with a high power scrubber and all that happened was the scrubber turned blue but the shower remained thoroughly stained.

    • Hallie From GDY

      Hello!

Thanks for your review! We’re so sorry you didn’t love your experience with GDY! Our PPL Eater is a blue-based purple so it can look more blue depending on the underlying tone, the porosity, and the texture of your hair. If you’d like to achieve a warmer purple, we suggest mixing our PPL Eater with our Ex-Girl.

As for the staining, we recommend using bleach based cleansers and hot water to remove staining of bathroom/kitchen surfaces. You can also scrub a paste of baking soda and hot water onto the stain to lift it from these surfaces! If your skin is stained, we recommend using makeup wipes or an oil based makeup removed to remove this excess pigment. Please feel free to email us at [email protected] if there’s anything we can help you with!

I had used this after using the lightener, as I have pretty dark and thick brown hair. The lightener was applied pretty evenly through all my layers of hair. The dye looked promising while I was sitting with it on, which I did for about 35-40 minutes, but when I washed the excess out I was left with some purple on the top of my head and my ends where a very dark purple/blue. After a few days the color had already started to fade into a grey color, so I mixed in the dye with my conditioner and applied that in the shower. Didn’t get back everything that had faded, but some color returned to my hair. After about another few days it had turned blue/grey, and I had decided to just let it all come out so I can try again later either with the leftover purple I had, or with a new color. But now my hair is a weird grey/teal/green color and looks a bit sickly to be honest.

I’m giving this product three stars because it made my hair feel great, the dye was easy to apply and smelled amazing; but I never got anywhere near an all-over bright color like some of the pictures shown or what I’ve seen others who use this dye get. The quick fading and ugly fade color that had occurred also takes marks off against this product.

I’m still excited to try again and maybe with other colors; but I really wanted a nice vibrant, sustainable purple and was severely disappointed with my first use.

It’s blue! It’s just blue. It’s a nice blue, but it’s blue. All the staff responses to the reviews say it’s a cool purple so it will FADE blue, but I just dyed my hair from a platinum blonde and it’s blue. You shouldn’t have to mix it with another shade in order to get the shade that was advertised in the first place, especially when the dye is so expensive.

I love the brand, I really wanted to love this dye, but it’s not at all as advertised. Please, God, I am begging you GDY, either change the formula or change your branding for this shade. It’s blue.

I’ve used Narwhal and Wondermint and loved ’em! The colors come out great, the dye smells nice and herbal, it doesn’t bleed once it’s rinsed out, and it has some great staying power.

PPL Eater is every bit as good as the other GDY dyes I’ve used, but it’s barely even purple. I was excited and managed to get a tube after calling 3 different Sally locations, too 🙁

My hair was bleached out to around the yellow blonde example in the photos, but PPL Eater made it straight up royal blue. It’s gorgeous, and there’s the barest hint of purple to the blue, but I wouldn’t call it so much a blue-based purple as just a blue dye, at least in my experience. It’s nothing like the product photos. Great product, and I might end up getting another color to mix it, but for me it wasn’t at all what was advertised.

Ok so I’m giving this color 5 stars because I was in for a nice treat. I had never used this brand before and I read the reviews and saw how many low stars it was getting just for this color. But OMG! This color/ colors are beautiful! It seriously has lasted me MONTHS. Now full warning the purple is only purple for a short time but it fades and stays into the most gorgeous ombré blue I never knew I needed! I have had so many compliments on my hair and my hair is not short I only need maybe half a bottle. So again it’s true it’s not the color purple it really says it is but I’m honestly so ok with it bc of the color it turns into. Gorgeous. I normally am a purple girl but this has changed me lol. I can’t wait to kowbunga green color next!

My hair was purple until my second wash-then it was blue. Two months later and it’s still blue (can’t get it out!) That being said it’s definitely long lasting-if you want a nice blue (It’s still very pretty, just not what I was shooting for) I’d definitely recommend this color, purple not so much.

I have dark brown hair that I don’t believe is super porous (box dyes literally never do anything), but I had some faint highlights put in months ago so I thought why not give purple a shot? I bought GDY PPL Eater thinking it would maybe tint my hair a little and not be super noticeable but still fun and omg. It’s so bright, some pieces are a deep blue, some are more obviously purple (which I love because it gives it depth)! It was super easy to use, the stains on my skin came off when I showered and my shower isn’t too bad, I haven’t made much of an attempt to get any stains out but it mostly came out when I put soap on the tile and scrubbed. Highly recommend this product, vegan and cruelty-free and cheap AND effective! Literally a quadruple whammy

I love the color when it is first applied! So vivid and gorgeous! Sadly it quickly fades, but to a lovely indigo/blue

    • Jackie from GDY

      Hi there,

Thanks for your review. So glad you love the vivid color. Due to the pigment shades that are used to make purple some hues may hold on to the hair longer than others. Reds/pinks are notorious for washing out/fading sooner.

I was very impressed by this dye job. I had dark blue almost black hair that I colour stripped and dyed before adding gdy ppl eater and with still slightly blue ends it dyed everything super well! And neither my skin nor my shower was stained purple for the following week. Of course, because this is a semi-permanent dye I wasn’t expecting it to fade fantastically but lucky for me it faded into a purple roots to blue tips ombre look which I got tons of compliments on 🙂 (It’s a little bit streaky now but I’m due for a touch-up). Also, after stripping and bleaching my hair it felt absolutely horrendous but this dye is so nourishing that I only had to spend a little extra time with my conditioner in and my hair actually felt pretty good! All in all, the vibrancy of the dye and the fact that I can feel like I’m not totally killing my hair makes this a winner for me.
(Disclaimer: I have very thin, straight, and light hair that absorbs colour really well. If you read the other reviews you probably know that not all hair types got the same result.)

I’ve been dying my hair purple for some time now and I was SO excited to support GDY and Hayley Williams. My mom always dyes right over whatever faded purple is in my hair, which is our mistake, but the dye did nothing. Okay, I take that back, it gave me blue roots. Besides that? My hair is the same faded purple and I’m so disappointed 🙁

I read the reviews and saw the complaints that this color comes out blue. I wanted purple but have loved the other colors from GFY so I took the risk. I like blue hair so the risk wasn’t a big deal for me. I have really dark brown (almost black) hair that when bleached has an orange-auburn color to it. I used PPL Eater and the actual paste is BLUE and I mean BLUE. When I washed it out I had a really hilarious result. Most of it is a deep purple. Not the light purple in the photos. But random shocks of my hair are neon blue. It’s really funny looking. I really think this color is verrryyyy picky about the type of hair it goes on. The dark purple isn’t bad. Just not what I was looking for. Other brands put purple in my hair bright no problem. I just think the formula is a little wonky. I gotta say… I got two colors for the price of one with this one. Lol

      Hi there,

I initially gave it one star because I wanted purple hair and it gave me that but with a LOT of blue tint but after that it just faded more and more to blue. I’m giving it three stars because it did make my hair a beautiful bright purple. As well as it being super pretty and I got like a ridiculous amount of compliments while at the grocery store

      Hi There,

This dye would be useful to put over red if the dye you’re using is heavily red based as this dye is heavily blue based. I used a different purple dye from a different brand but it somehow turned my hair red and remembered I had this dye and didn’t use it since it turned ny hair blue but honestly this dye does work if you’re looking to go from red to purple if you put it over red or the dye you’re using is too heavily red based. I highly suggest making changes to the formula so it’s actually purple similar to manic panic’s purple haze or arctic fox’s purple rain. Because this dye is turning people’s hair blue and not purple and not everyone can or wants to spend the money to get another dye just to get the purple that is advertised to them because it’s wrong and messed up.

    • Jackie from GDY

      Hi there,

Thanks for your review. Our purple is a blue based purple which means you may see a more violet hue. For a warmer purple I would suggest adding some red or pink if you are able to.

First let me say if I could give this a zero I would. As you can probably see from every other review it was blue and the solution is to spend more money and buy another colour to go with it! No only was my hair blue, but I applied it two weeks ago and now my hair is a disgusting green colour!!! No matter how many washes I do this is not coming out!! I had such high hopes and I am beyond disappointed. You say you’ve listened to customers and made changes to the formula to make it more purple but you haven’t. Luckily I’ve contacted Lime Crime and they’re going to help me out with a true purple to rectify this disaster I’ve got on my head. I’m not normally one to complain but I’m so angry and disappointed

    • Jackie from GDY

      Hi Lexie,

Thanks for reaching out. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy your PPL eater experince. Our purple is a blue based purple so it can pull more violet. As purple fades due to the color make up it will fade blue and then green. Please feel free to reach out to [email protected] to pass on any further information.

I was super excited to have this amazing purple hair colour… My sister dyed her hair with this a while back and I loved it! So I bought it 2 months ago, I dyed my hair a couple of days ago and it’s BLUE!! I know how hard it is to get out of hair so I’m pretty upset. Hope you have better luck!

    • Jackie from GDY

      Hi there,

Our purple is a blue based purple so sometimes hair holds on to the blue hues more than the reds/pinks in the dye and you can end up with a more violet purple. We suggest adding Ex-Girl to your dye before applying if you are looking for a more warm toned purple.

I so badly wanted to love this dye because my friend had great experiences with the Steal My Sunshine colour, but this was so disappointing. I bought this dye when I was in the USA at the start of the year and I was really excited to try it when I got home, but when my hairdresser first put the dye in the bowl she couldn’t believe I hadn’t been given blue dye by mistake, and she was horrified when the end result came out completely blue as well. Luckily it was a lovely shade of blue and I liked it, but its not what I paid for. The first time I used it we left the dye on for 30 minutes as per the instructions, but it came out really patchy with some parts looking very pale and washing out to a blue-y/green colour within a couple of weeks. The only time I saw any purple in my hair was during sunset with direct warm sunlight on my hair. I still had half a tube left so we tried again a few months later and left the dye on a bit longer than the box instructs, but it still came out blue and patchy, with areas that had been saturated with dye barely holding it at all. I’ve seen other reviews (as recent as last week) where someone from GDY suggests mixing this colour with another shade, but surely if the the colour on the box is clearly purple then you shouldn’t have to buy another dye to get anywhere close to that colour? Before this I always used a blue-based Directions purple dye which is a fraction of the price and the colour is much more accurate (and has never been so patchy), so I don’t really understand what excuse GDY can use when they charge nearly 4x more and then suggest buying more dye to fix the problem with this one. I know from friends’ experiences that most of the other shades are great, so I’m really disappointed with this one because I wanted to like it.
The one positive to this dye is that it fades from a dark electric blue to a nice, brighter blue which lasts really well, though that might not be a positive if you don’t like blue.

Sadly, I wouldn’t rush to use this brand again after this experience, even if they did start selling it in the UK.

  32. mckennakinney1995

I put this dye on my white hair. * The color on this box is very misleading. I assumed that this dye was a purple based purple when that is just simply not the case. I have had blue hair 2 times before and genuinely hated it each time. Blue is the WORST to get out. I wanted to dye it purple because it always fades so lovely. Do not buy this color if you do not want your hair to be blue. It is not an ugly color or anything but it is far from what I wanted. I’ve been trying to fade it out for weeks and it is so, so stubborn. It’s had me in tears multiple times. And I decided to do this right before Halloween so I get to have this miserable mess throughout the holidays and listen to family members make comments about how they thought I hated blue hair on me and why I would dye it back to such a color, blah, blah, blah. Will definitely nooooot be purchasing again.

I used this last night and my hair is a very dark vibrant blue. Kind of what I’ve seen with people who use blue ruin. I’m wondering if the bottles got switched by some turd in the store or mixed up in packaging by GDY. Either way it’s horrible and not what I wanted AT. ALL. In tears reading people say it lasts a long time because I want this out of my hair ASAP. I’m begging y’all to label the bottles with the color name as well.

I recently ordered PPL EATER in the new formula (warmer base) and it’s exactly what I was looking for. I used the old formula PPL EATER several months ago and it was definitely not what I was going for. It was much more blue and faded into a teal color. Overall, the color wasn’t BAD, it just wasn’t what I was trying to do and not what I expected. Blue/teal stays in my hair basically permanently, so I was a little disappointed that I was “stuck” with it for the time being. I let my roots grow out long enough so I could bleach them and try the new PPL EATER formula. I LOVE IT. Like I said, it’s exactly the color I was going for in the first place. So now I’m rocking a purple/teal look, and I’m loving it.

Started using this dye a few months ago and honestly really loved it. I wanted a blue and a purple so I used this one with blue ruin and it was really pretty. it was definitely blue leaning but I really didn’t care because it was a nice blue and faded into a really nice bluey teal color. Now I am trying to go for a more purple look so I’m combining sky high with ex girl. Hopefully that will turn out well but, it’s been a long process to try to get to that because I’ve been trying to get this color out of my hair for the last 12 hours. I started with the color oops hair color remover which I used previously and it worked great on other brands. But with this one it made absolutely no dent in it. So then I I decided to just go ahead and bleach, since I needed to update my roots anyway. I did that and my very dark brown roots turned to a much lighter yellow color but the blue was still there. I was freaking out because I was very confused, so I went through and washed my hair twice with Dawn dish soap and then did a bleach wash. The color is still there. I am currently bleaching again hoping my hair will not fall out. I do have to get this color started otherwise I’m going to have yellow roots and blue ends and that is not a look for me. Other than the long-lasting color it’s great though! And honestly if you’re looking to stay blue for a while 10 out of 10 would recommend. Just be prepared to shave your head as soon as you want change- I might.

I had waited a very long time to get back into the colored hair world, and decided to give this color a try because it was recommended to me and the purple on the box is STUNNING. HOWEVER, I dyed it with this 4 months ago and have done many vitamin C treatments and even went through a full on bleaching a bleach wash to get it out. The bleach did not get it out AT ALL and within my 8 years of dying my hair this has never happened to me. It was still BRIGHT. I’ve resorted to dying it over an ACTUAL purple because this purple isn’t even purple, but BLUE! Absolutely horrible and staining color, and has made me too scared to try any of the others.

I had loved how this looked over natural brown hair….making it darker with that hint of purple. I wasn’t looking for this to be how it is on bleached hair. Just looking for that little something. I was really hoping this would be a bit bolder. I left it on for an hour at least. My hair looks a little darker, but not much purple. My ivory bathtub on the other hand….that thing is PURPLE! I don’t recommend this if you have a non smooth surfaced tub or washing area. If it is textured or porous you may have issues with staining when you wash. It comes off of the skin pretty well though which is nice. If I try it again, I will have to get the lightener I guess.

    • Jackie from GDY

      Hi There!

Thanks for your review! Our dyes are packed with pigment to give you a vibrant color on lightened hair. However, that also lends to some bleeding and staining, but that should be able to be washed a way safely with bleach. I’m glad you were able to get a slight tint. We do recommend that for a more vibrant color you lightening you hair before dying.

This is more of an ultra violet than a purple as it’s heavily blue toned. only in direct sunlight does it look purple. I used the GDY bleach kit and colored over a bleached pink and very white blonde. This is a purple toned blue hair dye that’s very dark and saturated. I don’t hate it but I won’t buy this again unless I want blue hair

I really like the parts that are purple, but even after I used their bleach kit (which worked amazing) some spots didn’t turn purple but just really dark almost black. For the price I think it should have more product, I had to get 2 bottles because I wasn’t able to get all my hair with just one. I bought this thinking that it was going to be a beautiful deep purple on my blonde highlights. I have BRIGHT blue hair now. It has been 4 months and it is still blue. Holy lies. Ok, so I have had purple hair for years. I always have had to mix my own dye to get the right blue based purple.after being in a wedding and going brown for a few months for that I did some research and found this color. All the pictures seemed to be my perfect blue based purple!! So I lightened my hair and ended up with easily a level 9 bottom and up to some hot roots that were maybe a coppery 7. Used the dye per instructions.. was little worried that it looked pure blue but y’know it always looks different wet…. well it looked. Blue cause it was blue.the ONLY part of mohair that was any tinted of purple were my hot copy roots. Gorgeous warm purple. The rest was straight up blue. Like blue blue. Not blue based purple. Not purpley blue. Just blue. It faded to a dang teal. Looked just like atomic turquoise. I have no clue how this is marketed as a purple dye. My length was a clean lift, with my natural roots going hot so idk how ANYONE would get purple unless they started with a red color to begin. I’m not sure how to negate the blue cause l know blue never leaves your hair. If you want purple hair but blue is fine toon buy this. If purple.is what you’re after and not straight up blue…I’d definitely test an inconspicuous patch first.

So disappointed in this color. I’ve used two other GDY colors, and they were great. This is just a huge miss. I pre-lightened my hair, and when I rinsed it, the color was straight up denim blue. I don’t wash my hair very often, maybe twice a week, and everyday the color was fading more and more. Don’t even know how that could happen. I’ve cried a lot since this color is has been in my hair because it seems as though it’s stained my hair. I’ve been using a clarifying conditioner to attempt to lighten the color, and even the pre-lightened parts that were near platinum blonde are now a light brown. Very, very disappointed in this color.

After having good experience with two other colors, I’m disappointed as how the purple turned out.

I have curly textured hair. I’m not afraid of using bleach, but I still like giving my hair time to recuperate. So I did my research and was very happy to know that this purple and Blue Ruin could be used on darker hair without bleach for a tint.

I wasn’t expecting a bright color. I expected a dark black hue with tints of purple that would show when light would hit it.

I left the color in for 50 minutes and it did not take to my hair at all. It looks black and too me with hints of a dark green if I stare to hard. But other people have said they see no purple. I’m hoping with a few washes maybe the purple will show.

I’m highly disappointed as purple is one of my favorite hair color dyes due to how it fades into blue.

But in the future, I do plan on trying this color with bleach but it would be nice for us dark hair creatures to have fun without bleach once in a while.

The good news is that the staying power seems to be strong, but now I’m stuck with a dark blue color, and I wanted purple. Prior to purchasing this product, I have used Riot (Orange) in my hair and loved it so much! The red-tinted orange was just so stunning. I looked into PPL Eater since I wanted to change colors. So lesson learned – yes, it is a blue- based purple, but too much blue pigment. I had prebleached my hair to almost white, in hopes of the blue tones that people complained about would not be true. But it just straight out looked blue. Based on social media comments, I tried to cancel out the blue with the red dye, Rock Lobster. It seemed to do the trick and turned most of my hair purple. But it looked more of a very dark, almost black, plum-like violet and some of the blue is still showing through. And my roots, which is virgin hair bleached, somehow looks almost maroon/ red-violet. Sorry, GDY, but this color is simply a miss. Guys – sorry, but I think based on all the complaints you might want to do a different formula for this color.

So I’m really torn about GDY in general. First try I ordered yellow from Sephora, received a yellow box with a tube of orange color. Had to return it. Tried purple, and it straight came out blue. There is not even a hint of purple or lavender after rinsing out the product. We used fader, too. It sat on my daughters hair for an hour, shooting for a a lighter purple, and when we rinsed her hair, it was plain, light blue. Again, NO PURPLE from day one. Seriously disappointed. The colors look so cool and versatile with the fader and mixes that can be done, but geez, to buy yellow and get the wrong product altogether, the. To buy purple and get blue hair, it just isn’t cool.

Pros: the dye smells amazing and felt so good in my hair. It conditioned my hair so well, which I’ve never experienced with a dye before. It looked awesome for the first few weeks, even though some of it turned blue (which I was not upset about). I got so many compliments on it.

Cons: I’m now stuck with mint green hair and every stripping method I’ve tried isn’t getting rid of it.

I love this dye so much but it stained my hair really bad. I’m sure other colors aren’t like this, maybe it’s something with this particular one I’m not sure. Have used ex girl before and it was amazing

Hi! Thank you for your review on PPL Eater. We are glad you loved the color! As it fades, the color can tend to stick around depending on how porous the hair is. Feel free to email us at [email protected] if you have any questions!

After one wash it was already pretty much blue and after probably a month it turned green. Dyed it at the end of March and parts of my hair are still green. Gave it two stars because at least it lasts

Hello, thank you for your review on PPL Eater. We are so sorry you had a poor experience using GDY. Our purple is more of a cool tone which has a blue base. Sometimes, depending on the hair, it can fade more on the blue side. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions by emailing us at [email protected]!

This was my second time purchasing and using GDY – I have previously used Ex-Girl and loved it. The application of Ppl Eater went on great and the color looked awesome for the first few weeks, but I caution others before buying this hair dye if you don’t want your hair to fade to blue. This color is BLUE based. (My hair was bleached and it’s a weird turquoise right now.) Pretty disappointed because I love and want to support GDY products. My friend, however, also used Ppl Eater over her virgin dirty blonde hair and it’s turned into the coolest indigo color that she’s really happy with. Would love if GDY came out with a second purple color that fades to silver because I would buy that in two seconds!

I’ve never dyed my hair so I thought purple was the perfect color to start with. I’ve seen positive reviews for this PPL EATER so I bought it at my local Sally’s I applied it to my dark brown hair. I saw the pictures of this color on your website with dark hair colored so I figured it would also work with mine. Well.. it didn’t Im not sure if I did anything wrong or skipped steps but the color didn’t really show I tried three times on my tips and didn’t see a difference. As I went to wash it out with cold water all the dye came off.

Thank you for your review. We’re so sorry you didn’t have a good experience using GDY. Our darker colors can add a tint to darker hair but if it is darker than a level 5 there is a possibility that it may not show up. Please email us at [email protected] for more information!

I never write reviews on anything but felt like I needed to…
This dye was a very pretty purple at first but faded very quickly to blue. Its now neon blue and turning green very quickly. I wish I would have read the reviews on this before I put it in my hair, my fault I guess! Still extremely disappointing, now I’m trying to figure out how to get blue/green out of my blonde hair 🙁

    • Becca Sievers

We are so sorry to hear that you had a poor experience using PPL Eater. PPL Eater is a blue based purple and certain hair types hold on to the blue pigments more. If you can email us at [email protected] we would love to talk more about your experience!

    Okay, so LISTEN.

This hairdye is AMAZING in color and in the smell. Omg it smells so good when you squeeze this stuff out.

Yknow how they said its pigmented? Well, GIRL. ITS PIGMENTED. You want paste colors, literally only add one dallop of color and the rest fader. I didnt do that ( cause i wanted my roots to be darker) and it turned a really pretty navy/vibrant purple on me.

As someone who has dyed her hair alot, i know that it’ll fade and it’s gonna look GLORIOUS. The outcome was darker than i expected but i am LIVING for the color when its under the sun. Its like “BAM. HI. HOW ARE YA?!”

Soooo all in all, yeah. I would 10/10 say it got the job done. Imma try a different color next time but WOO GDY!

Feeling really disappointed in this color. Wanted to get a nice light purple, so I mixed with a lot of gdy fader. Turned my hair very very purple after leaving it in only 15 minutes. Tried to wash it out, and my hair immediately faded to a neon blue, which is not at all what I wanted. Don’t think I’d ever recommend this product.

    • Becca Sievers

Hi Lillie! We are so sorry that you weren’t able to achieve the color that you wanted. When mixing colors with Fader, you only need a small dot of color compared to Fader! We would love to discuss more with you. Feel free to send us an email at [email protected]!

I’d seen comments on Ppl Eater not working and it just making your hair blue, but I decided to try it because I’ve been loyal to gDy since I started dyeing my hair. I used only a small amount of it with a lot of ex-girl and it very quickly turned blue! Extremely disappointing especially because I had blue ruin in my hair for over a year and didnt want blue anymore. After getting that removed, I have blue hair again… DO NOT USE unless you want blue hair.

      Gabriella,
We are so sorry to hear that you had a poor experience using PPL Eater. If you can email us at [email protected] we can hopefully get to the bottom of it to see what happened!

I ordered PPL Eater and it didn’t really dye my hair purple. I started out with blonde, virgin hair, it was purple for one day, then went blue and now is a weird shade of green. This is disappointing as this was my one shot to dye my hair as I am out on maternity leave from a job that doesn’t let me use unnatural colors. I always wanted purple hair so I am sad that it didn’t last and now I’m stuck with green hair. Even the day that it was purple, it wasn’t very bright. I’m very disappointed as all of the reviews were awesome and your dyes came highly recommended

    • Becca Sievers

      Kelsey,
We are so sorry that you had a poor experience with GDY. Depending on the hair type, the red pigments in PPL Eater can ⁣potentially wash out of the hair cuticle before the blue pigments do which results in PPL Eater fading blue. If there is anything we can do for you or if you would like more information on why this may have happened, please email us at [email protected]!

In my dying experience purples have had a difficult time staying pigmented with my hair (don’t know why, they just always fade out too quickly) but the formula of ppl eater is by far the best I have ever used. I have my hair a lilac color using just this and fader, and it is my favorite shade yet! Getting the color I wanted on my damaged hair from years of bleaching, the formula makes my hair feel so healthy! I’m switching to 100% gdy products after this experience legit

I’ve been wanting to dye my hair for YEARS and have just never gotten the courage to do it UNTIL LIKE A COUPLE DAYS AGO I GUESS. This dye was amazing, smelled super good, and I used like… barely any and it was still super pigmented. I have v short hair so that’s one thing, but I probably only used like? A tablespoon or two? of dye and then a bunch of white conditioner and even after mixing them together it was still JUST AS PURPLE it was amazing and now I’m rockin some purple hair and I love it. I didn’t bleach the top part of my hair as long as the rest (bc i’m impatient) so the longest part of my hair is more of an ashy dark blue while the rest is a poppin purple but it looks cool I’m a fan. <3 And the fact that it's all vegan is a huge plus!!!

I love love love this color!! It’s so creamy and pigmented but it didn’t stain anything! If I got it on my skin I just washed it with Dawn dish soap and it rubbed right off and same with the counters and floors! (Yes I’m very messy) My hair was a light faded pink and I decided not to bleach because I wanted to see what it would look like, it’s purple in some lights but a deep blue in others. It’s awesome!! It also left my usually very dry hair feeling silky soft 🙂 i can’t wait to try other colors!!! I just ? it!! Thanks for letting me fufill my ? dreams!!

    • Hallie from GDY

      Hey Karyssa!
We’re so happy you love PPL Eater as much as we do! Our dyes are formulated with conditioning properties that re-hydrate and correct porosity (roughness) in hair that is compromised when you bleach or dye your hair. Be sure to share pictures of your gorgeous hair with us on social media!
      xx dye happy,
