GDY None More Black

“It’s like… ‘how much more black could this be?’… And the answer is… ‘None’.” A violet undertone keeps the color shiny and true.

Note: We created None More Black to be used as an additive to darken our other semi-permanent colors. We don’t suggest using None More Black on it’s own.

What does it do?

Our semi-permanent hair dye line combines salon-grade pigments with a nontoxic, conditioning formula that deposits ultra vibrant color. Semi-permanent hair dyes do not damage the hair, in fact they’re super conditioning! GDY’s formula combines a high-quality cream base, like a hair mask with essential oil benefits. The color is deposited on top of the hair shaft and acts like a stain that will fade out over time each time you wash your hair. Color can last anywhere from 4-6 weeks. We recommend using color protecting hair care like our GDY Color Kind Line to keep color vibrant longer.

What does it smell like?
Fragranced with Bergamot essential oil, our semi-permanent dye has a light citrus scent that is mood lifting.

Is this for my hair?

Our semi-permanent dyes will show the truest color on pre-lightened hair, levels 8-10. We recommend using our Lightening Kit to get the perfect base shade for your color.

What to know?
Semi-perm is a thick, conditioning formula, no need to mix with a conditioner.
Color payoff will vary based how much hair is lightened as well as on the porosity of the hair and underlying hair chemistry. We recommend a hair strand test to determine color payoff.

Safe on:
All hair textures, pre lightened, chemically treated, keratin treated, and color treated hair.

  • Healthy hair focused, no PPDs, Ammonia, Sulfates, Parabens or other harsh for hair chemicals or additives.
  • Sunflower Extract adds extra UV protection from the sun and hot tools that fade hair.
  • Fragranced with essential oil Bergamot, known for its mood-lifting properties.
  • Ultra creamy formula that deeply conditions while depositing color.

Our Semi-permanent dyes are free from:

  • Step 4: Section and apply directly onto dry hair. Make sure color is fully saturated at every step by combining product through each section.
  • Step 5: Let the color sit for at least 30 minutes.
  • Step 6: Rinse with cold water and style as desired with GDY Prime.

  • Allow at least 24 hours before your first shampoo.
  • Rinse hair with cool water each time you wash to minimize fading process.

So I absolutely did not read anything about this dye first or that it was meant as an additive for the other colors. I bought it to dye half my hair black. Upon first use, my hair was a very deep blue black. I did it again a couple days later, and my hair is definitely very very black now. Overall, it’s probably better suited for being a color additive. I would love to see a black that is recommended to be used on its own though. Basically my suggestion if you’re looking to dye your hair black with this dye is to buy more than one because you will have to do it again.

      Hi There!

Thanks for your review. We do suggest using this as a darkener for our colors rather than all over color, but I am glad you were able to get the color you desired.

I’m really sad this didn’t work out. the overall product is fine, it smells good and it applied easily. unfortunately the color didn’t take to my roots at all and the application ended up being really patchy. the teal hue is really off-putting and disappointing. I was hoping it would dye my hair proper black regardless of the violet hue (which was teal for me?) but I think it’s definitely better suited for a mixer.

I bought the RINSE conditioner along with this which I love a lot!

    • Jackie from GDY

      Hi Heather,

Im sorry your did not love your experience with None More Black. We created our None More Black to be used as an additive to darken colors and when used alone, certain underlying pigments may be stronger. Please feel free to reach out to with any other questions or concerns!. Im glad you were still able to find a product you love with the Rinse! I hope you give one of our other colors a try!

I read all these reviews and then decide to order. I was skeptical and kinda scared but I got it today (off Amazon, sorry) it was a silver box not brown might be the old formula not sure but my hair was a maroon/Burgandy red and I did not bleach. My hair is black!!! I love it. Also it didn’t seem to stain other things. I will have to do another layer because I didn’t get all of my hair but with how big the size is I can do that! Depending on how it fades (not a semi permeant fan usually) but I will more than likely be a repeat customer! I love this brand soon hoping to have every color! Amazing job! I love that the colors are mixable. First time dying my hair black (wanted to forever but couldn’t take the leap) luckily I lovvvve it! Thank you Hailey Williams and your natural hair dye science team! I enjoy thes product!

Thanks so much for your review! I am so glad you loved your GDY experience. Can’t wait for you to try our other colors too.

Okay this is the most disappointing dye I’ve ever used, honestly is sooooo misleading you should name it none more blue because it’s blue!! My hair
I was looking for another alternative to not dye my hair black and now I have blue hair soooo patchy and uneven and my shower it’s blue also
    Ugh I’ve wasted 18 dlls

So i bought this at sally’s beauty store because it was the only semi permanent black they had in stock, and the bottle is massive compared to “just for men” btw let me clarify i use this on my mustache lol. But any who my mustache is now a black with purple tint, and i enjoy it. This bottle will last me at least a year and a half with how little it takes to cover my mustache. I’d also like to note it didn’t burn or stain my skin but i suggest using beard soap on your facial hair right after. It does stain whatever you wash it out over but that doesn’t bother me because a good bleach scrubbing takes it away easily. I was looking for semi permanent because i have a hard time committing to permanent facial hair colors but i recently just got my hair colored silver and black and wanted my mustache to match so i said screw it and did it. For some reason its a few bucks cheaper at sally’s so ill continue to buy it there. But thanks for making a good product 🙂 OH AND IT SMELLS AMAZING 15/10

  6. mandie.media1

Very disappointed. The name and imaged of the dye are misleading. Its very much a deep blue. I would consider this my favourite brand of hair dye and i was very excited at the aspect of a semi permanent black dye, and using the fader definitely doesn’t make it grey, just lighter blue. I would suggest editing the description, images and working on the formula. It could definitely be more black.

I’m not usually the type to leave a negative review but I feel like I need to let other users know about this product before buying. When they say violet undertones they mean it. My hair is dark purple. My shower is dark purple. The staining due to the epic pigmentation is real so be careful, but that is to be expected. My hair color though is wildly disappointing. I am not sure now they got the models hair that black, but my hair is literally dark purple. I had brown hair before and hoped a black dye would give me a deep dark color as other black dyes have before, but my hair is purple, there is no hint of black or brown. I am not allowed to have colored hair for work so I have to find a fix very quickly. I am a huge fan of Good Dye Young, I love their colors and the poser paste but this isn’t black hair dye. Please if you are like me and work in a field where colors are not permitted do not use this color. I did a strand test first and the color looked dark and deep but unfortunately I did a strand of my hair that was already darker so the purple didn’t come through as much. Good Dye Young is a great brand and I don’t hold this product’s turnout against them but please be careful with this dye as it’s violet undertones are very present.

Ok I had this on my head processing while reading these reviews… freaked out and washed it off after 30 min. The results are this. Yes I agree the residue is crazy. I’ve been a stylist for 10 years and never have I experienced that kind of color transfer in my life. I wore gloves and my hands turned purple from my twice shampooed hair and my gel manicure ruined.

The colour is more like a dark brown with no violet (thank god ) it stained parts of my scalp purple but that’s it. Overall the colour is a bit bleak – I was hoping for a dark black

Red would’ve been a better option – not fire engine red but a burgundy red undertone.

All in all I’m not sure if I’m sold on this product yet …definitely hated the stain everything purple side of things ugh

    • Becca from GDY

Hey there! Thank you for your review. So sorry you had issues with staining. Our dyes are extremely pigmented to give you long lasting color! I’ve been wanting my hair black for awhile now but did not want to go into a salon to get it done, I have always heard good things about this brand and of course I love Haley Williams. I will say that my hair is DEFINITELY BLACK the only thing is the ends of my hair are green. Now my hair is originally a dark brown but my ends were a tad bit lighter than the rest of my hair, I had seen where there was no need in lightener for dying it, especially with semi-perm but I didn’t know if that may be why my hair is tinted green?
I’ve read reviews and I’m not entirely sure why my has a green tint to it when everyone else is saying a blue or violet color because I would love that but my tint is rather green. I didn’t know if maybe I didn’t keep it in long enough and if I should buy another bottle to re-dye my ends? Overall, in love with the dye just needing a little more help on making my ends blacker. And it doesn’t upset me that my hair is tinted green, I was more confused than anything after reading the comments.

    • Becca from GDY

Thank you for your review! We’re sorry you didn’t love your experience with GDY. None More Black was created to be used as a mixer to deepen our colors rather than to be used on its own. When dying lighter hair black, you may have to add some red pigment back in first in order for the color to be a true black. I’d love to explain this in further detail if you can send me an email at!

I accidentally bought black clip-in extensions, rather than brown. I needed a semi-permanent dye, so that my natural hair would blend in with the clip-ins. I bought this but I was super nervous because I never dyed my hair before and I read reviews about it turning people’s hair blue and purple.
I tried it anyway and I loved it!! While rinsing my hair, it did turn the water teal. However, my hair is completely black!

  11. Apothecium

If I could give this less than one star I would. Do not buy this product if you want your security deposit back.
My shower is completely ruined. I regularly dye my hair funky colors and this is the first time I’ve used this brand. Never before has my shower been so stained. An entire box if baking soda isn’t even enough to get this purple out.

In terms of my hair. Sure its soft. But it didn’t even cover up my previous green color completely (which I desperately needed done for a new job)

Thanks for costing me way more money than the labeled price.

    • Hallie from GDY

We are so sorry for any inconvenience you may have been caused in using our dye. Our Semi-Permanent dyes are highly pigmented and do tend to bleed for a bit after you’ve finished dyeing your hair. Please reach out to us at if you have any further questions or concerns.

I’m not 100% sure if I received the same formula that these other people did, or if they updated it since some of these reviews were written because I will be totally honest… after reading them I almost didn’t buy this product, but I LOVE my hair.

When I opened it, I looked at the color as a small droplet and it was black, but I could definitely see a purple undertone to it. I wasn’t very picky myself and was just looking to seriously fix my hair, so I decided to just go for it. Maybe the purple is a hint or shine that you can see in the sun (and I’m sure totally enhances those other GDY colors), but my hair is truly BLACK. If there is purple in my hair I don’t even mind it (but I swear I can’t find it).

I do have to agree that there is A TON of spill/bleed to this product, so make sure that where ever you decide to apply and wash with it you are aware that it could stain.

I LOVE this product, and I hope that new users don’t get turned off by a few of these reviews.

Thank you so much for your kind words! We are so excited that you love our None More Black as much as we do!

Talk about PIGMENT! There -in my opinion- is None More Black.
I have brown, thick & curly hair, and while I typically have issues with other coloring products I didn’t have a problem with this color/product at all!

I didn’t bleach or lighten my hair as suggested, but I still got my desired result. Because this is such a pigmented color and my hair already is a dark brown color I applied it and left it on for about 35 mins and then rinsed it out with COLD water & I could immediately notice the difference. My hair is black, but instead of the violet undertones it has more of a red/ burgundy undertone, which I think is because I didn’t lighten or bleach my hair beforehand. Ultimately None More Black is Amazing. The smell is nice, the consistency is great & it will leave your hair feeling soft.

I will mention that the only con to this color is the clean up afterwards. It will leave a violet residue, so I used Clorox & baking soda and it lightened the violet color significantly.
Ultimately None More Black is Amazing. The smell is nice, the consistency is great & will leave your hair feeling soft.

GDY is allll about pigment. We’re so excited that you were able to get your dream hair color without lightening your hair first! Thank you so much for your kind words and support of GDY!

  15. Caroline

All right. Let me just start by saying that I have been ride or die for GDY none more black like… literally since it launched. I am allergic to pretty much everything so finding a dye that was natural and chemical/allergen-free while also having a nice smell and a texture that didn’t drive me crazy and a formula that didn’t stain literally my entire life was super exciting and I didn’t even mind that the color didn’t last as long as with a box dye or having to do an hour-long clarifying wash/dry sequence before dyeing. It was worth it.

WELL. Flash forward to the launch of the ~new~ formulas. I finally ran out of my old formula bottles and started on my first bottle of new formula. Now, I will say that I forgot completely about adding the green to “balance out” the fact that the new dye was supposed to be, as I had heard through the grapevine, “very purple”. Then I realized as I was applying the first large lump to my head. But surely it can’t have changed THAT much, I thought. A little purple isn’t going to kill me. It probably won’t be noticeable and everything will be fine.

EVERYTHING IS NOT FINE. First of all, it’s literally just purple. It came out purple on my gloves, purple when it stained my countertops, purple wherever I got it on my skin by accident, purple everywhere. So I spend an hour with it on growing more and more anxious. Then I go to wash it out and in the mirror I’m like oh good, it looks pretty black, this should be fine.

NOT FINE!!! I pull my hands away from my hair after about the usual 15ish minutes of initial rinsing (in the shower, I don’t really have a deep sink I can use for this kind of thing) and they are PURPLE. And it WON’T COME OFF. Even now I’m sitting here typing this and there’s purple all over my fingers. Just from a rinse! Then I get out of the shower and my entire back and legs are stained purple! Like you can see where the colored water ran down in trails! So I’m standing here rubbing shampoo all over my back trying to get these nasty stains off, stains in a shade I didn’t even WANT anywhere near me to begin with, and I don’t even want to talk about the fact that the floor of my shower is probably PERMANENTLY purple. Okay. And lo and behold, yes, I can see the purple tint to my hair. Which is supposed to be none more BLACK. BLACK. Literally change the name to None More Purple or All More Black or Literally Not Even Black. There was no reason for this to be purple. The old formula wasn’t bright purple! And miss me with the “well first you have to add green to it and that was your first mistake” because A) I highly doubt that would have taken away the new, apparently MASSIVE staining powers of the new formula and B) not all of us have the money to buy extra bottles of an already kind of expensive hair dye to make it look a color it’s already SUPPOSED to look! If you call a shade “none more black” then make it black!! And if you initially make it actually black then don’t change it to make it purple and still call it black!! And also miss me with “maybe you should use the shampoo and conditioner we recently released” because a crazy overpriced shampoo and conditioner is not going to fix THE SKIN ON MY BACK, LEGS, FEET, HANDS, AND NECK or the floor of my shower! Or the fact that I don’t want purple in my hair and I have purple in my hair! Or the fact that apparently from other reviews I see I can now look forward to getting purple all over my entire life! When all I wanted was a routine touch-up to my BLACK hair that I have had for over a year that I LOVE HAVING that I don’t AT ALL want to be purple!

I honestly don’t even know if I want to use GDY anymore. That makes me really sad to say but I don’t know if I can go through what I went through tonight again. I miss the old formula. The new version doesn’t smell as good, doesn’t make my hair feel as soft, permanently stains everything, and… oh yeah. IT’S NOT BLACK. IT’S PURPLE. So disappointed.

We are so sorry you’ve had such a poor experience with GDY. We’ve formulated our None More Black to be a violet based black which makes it great for deepening the shades of our other dyes. Unfortunately, this doesn’t help those who wish to dye their hair a straight black color. We are working on this issue and we are very close to resolving it. If there’s anything GDY can do to help you out at this time, please let us know by emailing us at!

I dyed my hair with this hoping for a color so dark, there rally was none more black than this. I was disappointed. I have brown hair and did not lighten my hair before dying it, not thinking I would have to. The color is nowhere near as dark as I wanted it, and has a more purple color than anything. I love the quality and the quantity of this product but the pigment was not high enough for a black coloring.

    • Hallie from GDY

      Hello Megan!

We’re so sorry your hair didn’t turn out as dark as you wanted. Our None More Black is a violet based black which we recommend using as a mixer to darken our other shades. We do realize that we have customers who only want to dye their hair black so we are working on a solution for the violet undertones in our None More Black! If there’s anything else we can help you with, please let us know!

ok to start with, i like the packaging. It’s sleek and easy to use. But the bleeding and fading OMG. It turned my hair color purple and not to mention the bleeding every time i brush my hair. My hand would turn purple as if i use purple paints on my palm; my white hair brush is now purple (i mean i can wash it off but still its very annoying.) I tried to give it another chance but still te color bleeding is is insane. Now my bathtub has purple stain, which I have to literally scrub it off with soap and cleaner. so disappointed as I saw many good reviews about this product.

    • Hallie from GDY

      Hello Sharon!

We’re so sorry you ended up with a stained tub and hands! Our colors are highly pigmented and tend to bleed for a few days after dyeing. To minimize this, GDY suggests washing in cold water and using color-kind shampoos and conditioners (such as our Wash and Rinse)! If there’s anything we can help you with, please let us know!

  18. OliviaM12345

i put this dye in my hair expecting it to make my hair black. I have medium to dark brown hair and I didn’t pre lighten it. This dye ended up turning my hair a dark purple, and it’s a lot lighter towards the top. It doesn’t look bad, but it’s not what I was looking for when I bought black hair dye. I washed it this morning to see if the color would even out a bit bit it doesn’t look like it did. Other than that, the dye feels very good in my hair, and you get a lot of dye for the price.

    • Hallie from GDY

We apologize that your hair was not dyed a true black like you were expecting. Our None More Black is a violet based black which we suggest using to darken the shades of our dyes. We understand that GDY has customers who want to dye their hair a true black and we are working to get None More Black to a true black shade which can be used as a mixer or by itself! If there’s anything we can help you with, please let us know!

If you’re using this shade to deepen another color you don’t need much! Start with small pea sizes of black until you get the desired shade. Always test it on a paper towel! I loved mixing this with kowabunga for my dark green
