What does it do?

Our semi-permanent hair dye line combines salon-grade pigments with a nontoxic, conditioning formula that deposits ultra vibrant color. Semi-permanent hair dyes do not damage the hair, in fact they’re super conditioning! GDY’s formula combines a high-quality cream base, like a hair mask with essential oil benefits. The color is deposited on top of the hair shaft and acts like a stain that will fade out over time each time you wash your hair. Color can last anywhere from 4-6 weeks. We recommend using color protecting hair care like our GDY Color Kind Line to keep color vibrant longer.

What does it smell like?
Fragranced with Bergamot essential oil, our semi-permanent dye has a light citrus scent that is mood lifting.

Is this for my hair?

Our semi-permanent dyes will show the truest color on pre-lightened hair, levels 8-10. We recommend using our Lightening Kit to get the perfect base shade for your color.

What to know?
Semi-perm is a thick, conditioning formula, no need to mix with a conditioner.
Color payoff will vary based how much hair is lightened as well as on the porosity of the hair and underlying hair chemistry. We recommend a hair strand test to determine color payoff.

Safe on:
All hair textures, pre lightened, chemically treated, keratin treated, and color treated hair.

  • Healthy hair focused, no PPDs, Ammonia, Sulfates, Parabens or other harsh for hair chemicals or additives.
  • Sunflower Extract adds extra UV protection from the sun and hot tools that fade hair.
  • Fragranced with essential oil Bergamot, known for its mood-lifting properties.
  • Ultra creamy formula that deeply conditions while depositing color.

Our Semi-permanent dyes are free from:

  • Persulfates
  • Paraben
  • Resorcinol
  • MEA

  • Step 1: To create the best canvas for your color, we recommend lightening your hair using our GDY Lightening Kit.
  • Step 2: Mix color in the GDY Color Mixing Bowl and use gloves to prevent staining hands.
  • Step 3: Ensure you strand test first before applying color all over your head.
  • Step 4: Section and apply directly onto dry hair. Make sure color is fully saturated at every step by combining product through each section.
  • Step 5: Let the color sit for at least 30 minutes.
  • Step 6: Rinse with cold water and style as desired with GDY Prime.
Care:

  • Allow at least 24 hours before your first shampoo.
  • Rinse hair with cool water each time you wash to minimize fading process.
  • Reduce hair washing days to extend color.

Tips:

  • While color is processing, use a cap to keep the color damp.
  • Coloring your hair is an investment. Make sure to use color protecting hair care like GDY’s Color Kind Line to keep color vibrant longer.
  • Product will stain, so protect hands, all surfaces and clothing.
  • Apply shea butter, coconut oil or thick conditioner to the hairline to prevent staining.

Absolutely LOVE this product. The color turned out gorgeous and it was so easy to apply. It wasn’t a huge mess and it didn’t bleed at all on my pillow. I cannot wait to try other colors!!

A year ago I did a split dye on my hair with a purple from another brand (which I won’t drag here but won’t buy again) and Narwhal. It was my first time buying GDY and I just stumbled on it in the beauty store not knowing anything about it. I put the Narwhal on an existing faded green and was amazed at the results. Dyed 2 weeks before a wedding and by the time the wedding rolled around the other brand had turned and faded terribly but Narwhal was still going strong and beautiful. It won’t let me add a photo… Needless to say I knew which side of my head to turn to the camera when it came time for photos, and what brand to buy in the future.

I am going to note that this blue is a commitment, I couldn’t even bleach it all the way out at first. Not mad, just had to rock a half bleach blonde, half blue look for awhile, by the time I went to Steal My Sunshine (approx. 6 months later using clarifying shampoo on it once a week) it did bleach out.

      Hi there,

So happy to hear our Narwhal lasted strong for you! I’m sure you rocked it! Thanks for your review.

I was disappointed. This came out bright blue versus the teal in the photos. Great if you’re looking for blue blue.

    • Jackie from GDY

      Hi There,

The more porous the hair the more it can pull the blue pigments. As you wash it, it will fade to a teal. If you have any other questions, please email our expert at [email protected].

love this color. i mixed a small amount with a conditioning mask for a more pastel-y turquoise and slapped it over level 10 hair – it came out a little brighter than i was expecting considering the ratio of dye to conditioner i used, but i lerv it. the color’s staying nicely after several washes which is a big bonus. it’s a perfect turquoise-y blue, and is fading so nicely to a light minty blue. 10/10.

I used this in Fall 2017 and Winter 2018. First time just on my roots and the second time as doing the “under layers” of my hair. I fell in love with this color immediately. How it came out of the tube was interesting, but don’t let the worry/fool you. It is the perfect icy arctic blue. I hope to do my whole head this color one day.

      Hi Dana,

Im so glad you loved our Narwhal color! Im sure you look fantastic. Thanks for your review.

I purchased Narwhal along with the lightening kit after seeing the positive reviews saying that it turned out brighter than expected and the color deposit was great — not the experience I had at all!

My hair is currently buzzed to a #4 on all sides except for a poof of curly hair on top. I used the lightener yesterday, taking my hair from a brown where it’s buzzed and a faded blue on the poof to a 7-8 strawberry blonde. I wasn’t worried about it turning out too green due to the reddish tint, so I went forward expecting great things today.

The first time I washed it out after 45 minutes, the color had barely stuck anywhere! I quickly dried my hair, waited an hour to make sure it was super dry, and then loaded on a second batch of Narwhal and left it on for over an hour, hoping for the best.

Well, the color stuck, but really only on the poof of hair on top of my head! Anything that hadn’t been previously dyed (but recall everything was lightened to the same shade using GDY’s lightener yesterday) barely took the color and turned a strange shade of greenish-teal, while the longer hair on top (excluding my roots) turned a vivid teal!

I’m not sure if this speaks negatively of the color or the lightener, but the color didn’t do what was expected at all! I’ll probably give it a week before I finally break and go to the salon to have it corrected. Sigh.

2 stars instead of 1 because it did stick in some places, and the smell was nice. But I won’t be purchasing any colors from GDY again.

    • Becca from GDY

      Hi Anne,

Thanks for your review and we are sorry you didn’t love your experience using GDY. If your hair lifted to a strawberry blonde and then you applied Narwhal, the blue and green pigments in Narwhal cancel out the red/orange pigments in the strawberry blonde which leaves you with a neutral color. Our dyes work best on level 10 platinum blonde to show the truest color of the dye. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected]!

This was my first time ever doing anything to my hair myself, and I’m really pleased with the results. My bleach job was a little uneven (I sectioned my hair out weird), so the color I put in over it came out a little uneven, too–a little tealer in some places than others, but it ended up looking more like high/lowlights, so it still looked good! It’s been close to a month now, and it’s probably a little faded, but the color still looks good. I didn’t have any problems with the color bleeding out, either

    • Jackie from GDY

      Hi There!

Thanks for your review. Welcome to the at home dye club! I’m so glad you were please with your results. You will only get better each time you do it. Happy to hear you didn’t have any problems with color bleeding either. I hope you have the teal hair of your dreams.

HOLY GRAIL AQUA BLUE! I have used every shade of blue from every hair color company on the market, and this one, as well as their Blue Ruin are BY FAR my absolute favorite. Teal/aqua blue has been a go-to hair color of mine for many years, and I’m so happy to have found this one!! I’m never going back. It’s not too green, and doesn’t fade out very green like I’ve experienced with most others. It’s very popsicle blue. I’ve also mixed a little bit of it with Rock Lobster and got a beautiful cherry/plum red. Been a lighter shade, it obviously fades faster than other shades, but totally worth it if you want that perfect, BRIGHT aqua shade!

i had never dyed my hair before but had wanted to go blue for years now. i chose this brand because i know hayley has been dying her hair since she was a kid and she’s not bald so i trusted this brand to keep my hair healthy.
i used 5 lightening kits and 2 bottles of narwhal (rip my bank account) on my thick wavy hair that’s passed my shoulders. after lightening was all done my hair was super yellow and i wanted to follow all the directions so i tried toning my hair a couple times. i finally got impatient and just dyed it while my hair was still a little yellow and actually, the color is extremely vibrant and even on the body of my hair. it’s a true teal which is surprising because many people in the reviews were having a bad experience with the color. i didn’t have any issues with staining, it washed off my skin fine and i scrubbed my bathtub and it came off. when i rinsed the dye out, i made sure that the water coming off my head wasn’t blue anymore and it didn’t stain any clothes or towel when i got out with wet hair. my only issue and why i took a star off is we (my boyfriend helped me get the back of my head) soaked my entire head in this dye for 30 minutes with a cap on and we made sure to put any excess dye on my roots but when i washed it out, my roots are the only thing that’s a lighter blue almost green? it’s not even my entire head either it’s just the roots on certain parts of my head lol
it doesn’t bother me so much because it isn’t patchy or anything, for the most part, the color is evenly distributed but my boyfriend thinks it looks bad and wants me to buy another bottle for my scalp lol. i just don’t know why the roots of my hair came out green when the roots should be where dye sticks the most but oh well
i will be buying dye from here again though when i want to go a different color

    • Becca from GDY

Hi there! Thank you for your review on Narwhal! The roots of the hair tend to be less porous (healthier) than the ends of the hair that have been processed. Basically, the ends can soak up more pigment than the roots which may be why your roots are a lighter color. You can re-lighten the roots to lift it lighter and create a more porous base for the dye to apply to or apply another round of dye which may do the trick! Feel free to email us at [email protected] with any questions!

I’m pretty mixed on my feelings for this.
I lightened my hair with the lightening kit (which worked amazing btw, since I have naturally dirty blonde hair) but after applying this dye I was expecting to have such a strong pigment like in the photos especially since my hair lightened so well. Followed the directions to a T. After initially rinsing out the dye with cool/cold water I’m left with a really faded algae green color.
The dye application was smooth and it smelled amazing, so I was sort of sad to see it didn’t really stick.
Wish there was an option on here to show how it came out.
((Would love to see this as a demi permanent dye though))

      Hi There!

Thanks for the review. Feel free to send some pictures to our expert at [email protected] for more help to your specific hair. However, I will say if your hair is lightened to a yellow-y when you put a blue tone over it it will turn a green color.

I have mixed feelings about this dye. I used Narwhal mixed with the darker Blue Ruin. My hair is naturally ashy blonde and I have grown out balayage, so a few bleached parts scattered throughout my hair.

The dye, in terms of colour, looks wonderful. It’s been almost a month since I dyed my hair and it is still vibrant. It has almost completely washed out from my roots, but that was expected.

Where I’m conflicted is that even at the one month mark post-dyeing, the collars of ALL my shirts are being dyed blue. I literally can’t wear my hair down (I have very long hair) when I wear anything but black clothing because it turns my clothes blue. Thankfully it has washed out of the many clothing items it has stained. The dye kept re-staining my neck and around my ears after every shower for a few weeks after I originally dyed my hair.

Oddly, it hasn’t dyed my sheets, which are a bit darker in colour so maybe I just can’t see it. It dyed a few of my pillow covers but that happened early on, when I expected the dye to bleed a bit.

I am writing this review because this morning I took a shower and the water was STILL running blue. The continuous bleeding from both wet and dry hair is something that has never happened to me before, and I have put semi-permanent funky coloured dyes over my mostly natural hair in the past.

    • Jackie from GDY

      Hi There!

Thanks for your review. Our dyes are packed with pigments and may-especially our dark colors- bleed for awhile. I highly recommend washing with water until it runs clear. If you need any advice or help with the color still bleeding or how to get it out email our expert [email protected]

I had high expectations for this color since I saw such vibrant example photos. Unfortunately your lightening kit only lightened the roots of my dark brown/black hair, but I still wanted to try this color out on it regardless. I left it on for about and hour and washed it out to find just a hint of blue on my bleached roots. no vibrant color at all, just a washed out color as if it was rich at one point but has faded away toward the end of its life. i can’t even call it pastel because it doesn’t even look good. I wanted to love your products so much and even paid for express shipping since I was so excited. but i’ve been left disappointed at best.

      Hi there,
We are so sorry you didn’t love your experience using GDY. Our semi-permanent dyes work best on pre-lightened level 10 hair. If the hair is not lifted light enough, the dye will not show up properly. If you have any questions please reach out to us at [email protected]!

tl;dr: Lighten your hair to level 10, probably should use a toner after lightening and before coloring, expect more green than blue if your hair has warmer tones (hence using a toner).

My hair at the start: Untreated, dark brown (level 2) (went up to level 8 using GDY lightening kit as recommended), thick, wavy, shoulder-length.

I bought one bottle of Narwhal only later to order two more since I didn’t order enough lightener to begin with (buy two or three, one bottle really is tiny). My hair did come out to a dark blonde color, but some spots DID lighten more than others, which was frustrating considering I sectioned my hair enough. That will be a separate review, though. 🙂

I didn’t want my hair to be too vibrant like the pictures, so I figured I did not need to go up to level 10. However, after using Narwhal TWICE, I am still left with this meh green/”teal” color. The first application did not take except for the spots on my hair that were about a level 9. After the second application, I covered all the spots I “missed” with a generous amount of Narwhal and STILL, it wouldn’t take. I used a cap as recommended as well. Don’t let the lightener or color dry out. Should I try again with my extra lightening kit and 3/4 leftover bottle of Narwhal? I think I’d rather shave my head and try then.

Almost $100 later, my hair is still nowhere close to where I thought it would be. Maybe GDY should develop a toner for brassy tones. I’d buy that.

    Efficacy: 2.5/5
Ease of application: 2/5 because of my hair type
Smell: 5/5, smells great thanks to the bergamot
Color: 3/5, but the picture of the dye is spot-on, box color is VERY misleading
Feel: 5/5 Hair does feel soft after coloring thanks to the creaminess.

P.S. Their featured videos are dead links, but you may be able to find them on YouTube. GDY needs more informative instructional videos though. Maybe include strand test examples too. Big sigh.

Hi there! Thank you for your review. We are so sorry you didn’t love your experience using GDY. If the hair had any hints of yellow left in it, then that is why Narwhal appeared more green in some areas. We are also working on fixing the links on our videos and we do have several tutorial videos on our YouTube channel! If you have any questions please reach out to [email protected]!

Massive GDY fan and at this point there’s no other product I’d use to colour my hair! Colours are awesome, narwhal is so vibrant and the whole process is super easy! Plus it didn’t ruin my hair like every other dye I’ve tried🤷🏼‍♂️

I’m conflicted. Whenever I dye my hair, I go in with the knowledge that you never really know how it’s going to turn out until you’re done. So I wasn’t too surprised when my hair was not the advertised color. Instead of vibrant blue-green teal, my hair is a duller true blue (it’s not a bad color necessarily). Though, inexplicably there is one spot on the top of my head that is a much deeper shade of blue/ borderline violet. My hair was lifted to an even white/ bleach blonde, so I can’t blame the uneven spots on that. Again, this isn’t a huge problem– just not ideal. There are things about the dye I am very pleased with, though. The fragrance, though extremely strong, is nice. And I had no issues with the dye staining my shower or my color bleeding, which is something I’ve dealt with with every other brand I’ve used. I was also surprised with how much product was in one tube. I bought two expecting to go through both to cover my whole head, but I easily got the job done with the one. With that second tube, I’m going to do another round of dying in attempts to even the color out a bit and hope it’s a little more vibrant. I’m going to give the dye the benefit of the doubt, and I plan on trying more colors in the future.

    • Becca from GDY

      Hi there,
Thank you for your review on Narwhal. As your color starts to fade, it will begin to fade into a truer teal color. The second application should definitely help even out the color. If you have any questions please reach out to [email protected]!

I am devastated at the way this turned out. Nowhere does it say you must bleach your hair in order to use this product, but it should. I followed all the directions (apart from bleaching) to a t. My hair was a dirty blonde/light red. It now looks like a nasty green pond scum color. I wish I could get a refund AND go back to the color I had before. This is dreadful.

    • Becca from GDY

      Hi there,
Sorry for your experience using GDY. In the description on all of our semi-permanent hair dyes we do mention that hair must be pre-lightened for best results. To remove the color, try using a sulfate based shampoo, a color remover, or bleach to lift it out of the hair. If you have any questions, please reach out to us at [email protected]
